İZMİR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

ESE201 Fall 2024-2025
HOMEWORK I
1) Water is pumped from a lake to a storage tank 15m above at a rate of 70 L/s while
consuming 15.4 kW of electric power. Disregarding any frictional losses in the pipes
and any changes in kinetic energy, determine

(a) The overall efficiency of the pump–motor unit

(b) The pressure difference between the inlet and the exit of the pump.

2) An oil pump is drawing 44 kW of electric power while pumping oil with density of 860
kg/m3 at a rate of 0.1 m3/s. The inlet and outlet diameters of the pipe are 8 cm and 12
cm, respectively. If the pressure rise of oil in the pump is measured to be 500 kPa and
the motor efficiency is 90 percent, determine the mechanical efficiency of the pump.

3) Large wind turbines with blade span diameters of over 100 m are available for electric
power generation. Consider a wind turbine with a blade span diameter of 100 m
installed at a site subjected to steady winds at 8 m/s. Taking the overall efficiency of
the wind turbine to be 32 percent and the air density to be 1.25 kg/m3, determine the
electric power generated by this wind turbine. Also, assuming steady winds of 8 m/s
during a 24-hour period, determine the amount of electric energy and the revenue
generated per day for a unit price of $0.09/kWh for electricity.

4) The steam requirements of a manufacturing facility are being met by a boiler whose
rated heat input is 5.5 3 106 Btu/h. The combustion efficiency of the boiler is measured
to be 0.7 by a hand-held flue gas analyzer. After tuning up the boiler, the combustion
efficiency rises to 0.8. The boiler operates 4200 hours a year intermittently. Taking the
unit cost of energy to be $4.35/106 Btu, determine the annual energy and cost savings
as a result of tuning up the boiler.
