Introduction to Science,

Technology and Society

Unit 1 - STS
Have you ev
wonder?
SCIENCE
TECHNOLOGY
Came from the ancient Greek word “techne” for art,
craft or skill which itself is derived from an earlier Indo-
European root “teks” which means to weave or to
fabricate.

TECHNOLOGY
refers to the ensembles of techniques by which humans
make artifacts that serve certain useful ends.
SOCIETY Totality of social organization
and its complex network of
social relationships / social
interaction.

CULTURE
a complex whole which includes
knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals,
customs and other capabilities and
habits acquired by man as a member
of society.
LET'S DISCUSS AND
ANALYZE
An example is how
Francisco Redi disproved
the Abiogenesis theory
which in his experiment
made use of three jars and
observe them to find out if
maggots will appear in all
jars. Below is a picture of
his experimental set-up.
Let’s answer the following
questions!
Let’s do this! (Activity 1)
Individually, cite 2 products/ processes of science and technology
which are necessities in one’s life and another 2 products/processes
which you think should have not been invented or part of the society.
However, please do get away with gadgets or appliances we oftenly
used at homes or schools. Put your outputs together as a group and
come up with a two- minute INFOMERCIAL entitled: SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY, A FRIEND OR A FOE. Upload your output in our
respective Facebook group.
