" Hi. Instructional System Design (ISD).

At first glance, learning and development might seem straightforward, but it involves considerable
planning, preparation, and background work before the actual delivery of the training.

So, why is this necessary? Simply presenting large amounts of information doesn’t facilitate effective
learning. While there is an abundance of information available online, designing training programs
requires a thoughtful approach. We need to determine the right amount of information to share, the
sequence of topics, the delivery methods, and how to measure the impact of the training.

Imagine a teacher jumping straight to multiplication without first covering addition. This could be
confusing or disengaging for students. Or think about a scenario where you’re taught letters in the
order A, D, C, and T, and then rushed into forming words without adequate time to understand each
letter. For a young learner, this would be overwhelming and confusing.

And this is true not only for a younger audience but for the learners of all ages.

For any Learning and Development to be effective, it has to be as easy as possible.

To achieve this, careful planning is essential. This includes defining objectives, sequencing topics,
choosing delivery methods, determining training duration, and selecting the right trainer.

The information provided to employees or learners must be organized in a way that makes it easy to
understand and retain.

Well, to do this, you need a defined process. Just as the development of a product, be it a garment,
or a website has a defined process that is followed, similarly the development of training programme
also needs a defined process.

And this is where instructional systems design which is also called as ISD comes in. Wondering what
these terms mean?

Instructional Systems Design is the practice of systematic development of instructional specifications

to ensure the development of the required competencies. It is the entire process of analysis of
learning needs, goals and the development of a delivery system to meet those needs.
Now, you need not worry about learning up this definition, as we will be studying all the steps of
Instructional System design in great detail.

To simplify what we just said, ISD is a formal method for training that includes:

Determining training goals based on assessments of learners.

Establishing objectives to improve relevant competencies.

Selecting appropriate training methods to achieve these goals.

Creating evaluation plans to measure training quality and goal achievement.

Now, there are many instructional design models that can be used to develop a training program,
and one of them is ADDIE model. ADDIE stands for Analyse, Design, Develop, Implement and
Evaluate.

It is very popular model and we will cover this model in detail.

Also remember that as we have already covered that there are many learning methods used in
corporates. But we will focus more on class room trainings as it is more advanced and you can apply
the learnings in other methods.

Thank you.
