Course Outline: COURSE CODE/TITLE: PHM 407/WEED SCIENCE

6 Credits 40: 5: 15

Objective: The objective of the PHM 407/Weed Science course is to equip students with a
comprehensive understanding of weed biology, ecology, and management techniques. Students
will learn to identify various weed species, assess their impact on agricultural systems, and
develop integrated management strategies that incorporate cultural, mechanical, biological, and
chemical control methods.

Content

Week 1: Introduction to Weed Science

 Definition and importance of weed science

 The weed science industry and its relevance to agriculture
 Basic principles of weed biology and ecology

Week 2: Weed Identification and Classification

 Techniques for identifying common weeds

 Classification of weeds based on life cycle (annuals, biennials, perennials) and others
 Understanding morphological and anatomical features of weeds

Week 3: Weed Biology and Ecology

 Growth habits and reproductive strategies of weeds

 Ecological roles of weeds in agricultural systems
 Interactions between weeds and crops

Week 4: Integrated Weed Management (IWM)

 Principles of integrated weed management

 Cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical control methods
 Developing an IWM plan for specific crops

Week 5: Herbicides: Chemistry and Mechanism of Action

 Overview of herbicide types and classifications

 Mechanisms of action of different herbicides
 Factors influencing herbicide efficacy and selectivity

Week 6: Herbicide Resistance and Management

 Understanding herbicide resistance in weed populations

 Strategies for managing and preventing herbicide resistance
 Case studies of herbicide-resistant weed species

Week 7: Weed Control Methods: Mechanical and Cultural Practices

 Mechanical control methods (tillage, mowing, etc.)

 Cultural practices to suppress weed growth (crop rotation, cover cropping)
 Evaluating the effectiveness of mechanical and cultural methods

Week 8: Biological Control of Weeds

 Introduction to biological control agents (insects, pathogens)

 Case studies of successful biological weed control programs
 Challenges and considerations in biological control

Week 9: Environmental Impact of Weeds and Weed Management

 Effects of weeds on biodiversity and ecosystem health

 Environmental considerations in weed management practices

 Strategies for effective weed control in vineyards, orchards, and nurseries
 Case studies of weed management in specialty crop production

Week 11: Innovation in weed management

 Current techniques in weed management

 Innovations in weed management technologies (precision agriculture, remote sensing)
 Contextualization on Innovation methods for weed management in Cameroon

Week 12: Field Studies and Practical Applications

 Hands-on weed identification and management techniques

 Field visits to observe weed management practices in action
 Group projects on developing weed management plans for local farms

Week 13: Revision and Future Challenges in Weed Science

 Review of key concepts and practices learned throughout the course

 Discussion on emerging challenges in weed science (climate change, globalization)
 Preparing for careers in weed science and related fields
Course Outcomes for PHM 407/Weed Science

Upon completion of the PHM 407/Weed Science course, students will be able to identify and
classify common weeds and assess their ecological roles in agricultural settings. Additionally,
students will demonstrate proficiency in developing and implementing integrated weed
management plans that address specific weed challenges while considering environmental and
economic factors.
