Community Service Weekly Report: Week 1

Name of the student: Rajrupa Bhattacharjee Register number: 2438929

Course: 1MPCO Date: 27.07.2024

Weekly activities: (List all community service activities carried out over the week)

Date/Time Process/Activity

24.07.2024 We planned a few games and activities for the

boys, keeping in mind that we would be
meeting them for the first time that week, and
we needed to establish a comfort zone with
them before we could freely engage with
them. We also planned the activities,
considering they belong to different age
groups.

25.07.2024 We were introduced to a room of about 30

boys aged 7-18 years. We did an ice-breaking
activity by asking them to toss a toy around
and tell us their names and what they like
doing. Then, we also played a game of
passing the parcel and acting it out with them,
which the boys immensely enjoyed.

Outcomes, if any (The results of the activities you undertook: these could be planned or
unexpected, positive or negative) We became familiar with all the boys and established rapport
with them. We learned all their names and knew what languages they spoke and what languages
they were comfortable with. We were able to engage with the boys and make them happy
genuinely. Acting it out was entertaining for them, and they laughed throughout playing it.

Feelings/Reflection (Your feelings as you undertook these activities or reflected on them

later) It was a bittersweet experience. On one hand, it made me very happy to see the boys laugh
and be genuinely excited. But then, when a boy at the end refused to believe that we were going
to come back the following week to play with them again, it made me very sad to realize that
these boys probably have so many trust issues because they have been abandoned, let down and
exploited many times in their life. Many boys recounted incidents with their parents, but I was
too scared to ask them where their parents were.
Analysis & Learning (Any particular insights, integration of theory and practice, use of
professional self, any contradictions/challenges, use of supervision or feedback) One of the
significant challenges we faced was the language barrier. Most of the boys spoke Kannada, and
only two on our team said. But many of the boys also spoke in Hindi, so it was easy for us to
communicate with them. One of the boys was very quiet, and it was difficult for us to make him
open up, but over the 2 hours, he eventually mixed in with his friends and played all the games.
We realized that many of the boys liked playing sports and video games, and this gave us
insights into what activities we can organize for them in the coming weeks that will be fun for
them. After interacting with them, one thing that came to my mind was whether these boys had
adequate intellectual and cognitive development and reached all the milestones per Piaget’s
stages of cognitive development. I was wondering if we could use some sort of intelligence
testing or assessments on them in the subsequent hours of our community service to see their
specific learning needs and maybe develop lesson plans accordingly. We also realized that the
few boys from other parts of the country were glad to be able to speak in their local languages
after so long.

Action plan for the next week(s) For the next week, our teammates and I will be celebrating
Anti-Human Trafficking Day with them on the 30th of July. We will be preparing a short and
lively dance performance for everyone. This day is significant because many of these children
under the DCPU have been victims of child trafficking, and they must be aware of the day that
celebrates their welfare and safety.

Points for class discussion (Any points you would like to discuss with your classmates or
with your course teacher) The classroom discussion points are:
1. How do we take up case studies in our community service and individually counsel some
of these boys?
2. How can we help these kids academically?
3. What is Christ, as an institution that has a memorandum of understanding with these
government houses for boys and girls doing for their welfare?
