Title: Youth and Media: Builders of Democracy from Avrillé-les-

Ponceaux

Author:BL

Avrillé-les-Ponceaux, a small French commune in the heart of rural France,

hosted 24 young people from five countries from October 4th to 14th,
2024. This village, with fewer than 500 residents, mostly of older age, was
filled with the voices of young enthusiasts and professionals gathered to
participate in a training workshop titled “Disinformation, Media, and
Manipulation with Media in Democratic Societies and How to Stay
Democratic in These Times,” as part of the Erasmus+ project.

The aim of this interactive workshop, attended by young people from

North Macedonia, Estonia, France, Sweden, and Croatia, was to inform,
educate, and share experiences about the role of media in modern
society, which faces a decline in democratic values and the rise of radical
ideological currents that threaten freedom of expression and speech. All
these processes affect the engagement of young people and their right to
shape the future, making it imperative for this training to raise awareness
of their role in their communities through the use of media.

The host of the project was the French association 'La Génération de
Demain' and four other partner organizations from the participating
countries, while the ten-day training was led by trainers Slave Kostadinov
from Macedonia and Emanuel Caristi from Italy. The workshops began with
short, dynamic activities designed to boost the group’s morale and focus,
each of which was thematically linked to media and their role. Every day,
we learned and were informed about key concepts and topics such as the
impact of media on democracy, media manipulation, fake news, and the
importance of spreading credible information.
The key part of each day was the practical application of what was learned
through exercises and examples that participants, divided into groups,
created independently. During the ten-day stay, participants had the
opportunity to share their experiences and tell personal stories and
situations about how media had influenced their lives. One of the most
memorable activities was the TED+ session, where three participants
shared their inspirational stories. In conclusion, participants created their
own workshops about media that could be practically applied in their
home countries with new participants.

Personally, as one of the participants in the project, I had the opportunity

to hear the experiences of other participants in their countries, but also to
share my own, drawing from my years of work in journalism. My
motivation for participating in this project was to remind myself of how
much my role in the media can influence life in the local community, and
to remind others how an individual, by using media in the right way, can
raise awareness and highlight relevant issues. For this reason, this
workshop, conducted in an intercultural team, provides a great experience
for young people to enrich themselves both personally and professionally.
