INSTRUCTIONS
• There are Three problems and 1 bonus problem. Answer all the problems.
• Closed book/notes.
• Use of computers or cellular phones is not allowed.
• Only non-graphing calculator is allowed.
• Formula sheet is provided. Only use of provided formula sheet is allowed.
• Only loose paper provided to you should be used to answer questions.
• Use only allocated spaces for your solution. You can write on both side of the
page
• Place the problems in sequence. The first problem should be shown first, etc.
• Begin your solution by either restating or summarizing the question (include
necessary diagrams, known parameters, and the parameters to be found)
• Draw a sketch and a free body diagram (FBD) whenever appropriate
• Show your work. Do not write only the answer. No credit will be given to results
without the solution method. If your results don’t match your solution procedure, you
won’t get credit for it, even if it is the right answer.
• Write the units with each value. One point will be deducted for each missing
unit.

(Do not write under this line)

Problem 1 (35 points): A beam of length L = 4 m supports a uniform distributed load with
intensity 𝑞𝑞 = 1.5 kN/m and a concentrated force 2 kN at point A. Point B is a fixed end.
(a) Draw the free body diagram of the structure.
(b) Calculate reaction force 𝑅𝑅𝐵𝐵 [kN] and moment 𝑀𝑀𝐵𝐵 [kN-m] at the fixed end (point B).
(c) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams. Show your calculations and identify
key information in each point of diagrams. Use either functional method or graphical
method.
(d) Determine the maximum bending moment 𝑀𝑀𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 [kN-m] and the maximum shear force
𝑉𝑉𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 [kN]

Problem 2 (30 points): A simply supported wood beam AB with a span length L = 4 m carries a
uniform load of intensity 𝑞𝑞 = 5.8 kN/m. due to the distributed load 𝑞𝑞 if the beam has a rectangular
cross section with width b = 140 mm and height h = 240 mm. Calculate the maximum bending
stress 𝜎𝜎𝑥𝑥 in tension and maximum shear stress 𝜏𝜏𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚
