Lab 3.9 - Physics Essentials (2024)
Lab 3.9 - Physics Essentials (2024)
Expected Workflow
● All lab materials are located in your lab bin. You should check that you have all
necessary supplies using the lab bench inventory list.
● When you are at the lab benches, you will take your measurements, only. You
can answer the remaining calculations and questions at your assigned seat after
completing the experiments.
● After completing your calculations, you will share your data on the class
spreadsheet.
● You can collaborate with your lab partner to discuss questions, but your writing
must be your own.
● Completed labs are turned into Showbie.
Lab Notebook Directions
● Your lab should be written by hand in your notebook or on
an iPad. You cannot type the lab.
○ Begin the lab on a fresh sheet of paper in your notebook
or on a new document in your iPad.
Data
Create a data table in your notebook with time (minutes) as the independent variable and
temperature (oC) as the dependent variable. You will take measurements every 30 seconds for
12 minutes. A sample of what your table should look like is below (your table will be larger).
0.5
1.5
2
Useful Information (not included in lab notebook)
melting point = the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid
Procedure
1. Choose Trial 2.
a. Click on the trial.
b. Select Trial 2.
c. You must hit Load in order to change the trial.
2. Restart the video. Pause it when the temperature is about 69.0oc on the phone. It does not need
to be exactly 69.0oC.
3. Click on the tool button in the upper right corner of the video.
4. Select the timer button.
5. You will see a timer on the screen. Move it to a convenient location.
6. On the timer, hit the reset button so the time reads 0.0000 m.
7. Record the exact temperature on the phone for 0 minutes in your data table.
8. Advance the video, frame by frame, until the time is 0.5000 m. Record the temperature at this
time. Continue to advance the frames and record the temperature every 0.5000 minutes.
9. Stop taking data after 12 minutes.
Calculations
None.
Graph
Build a graph of temperature (y-axis) versus time (x-axis) for the unknown
liquid. Your graph should include an appropriate scale, labels with units for
your axes, and a title. Do NOT connect the points or draw a best-fit line.
Answer to Purpose
Write an answer to the purpose question. Your answer should be 1-2
sentences in length. Be sure to include any measurements or calculated
values that best support your claim.
Post-Lab Questions
Answer all questions in complete sentences. Be sure to check your spelling and grammar, and do NOT use the word “it.” You may discuss the
questions with your partner, but your answer must be your own.
1. Once the unknown liquid begins to freeze, what happened to the temperature of the unknown liquid? Reference
data from the lab in your answer.
2. Compare your graphs from Lab 3.9 and Lab 3.11.
a) What are two similarities? Be specific.
b) What are two differences. Be specific.
3. The graph in this lab is called a cooling curve and shows a substance undergoing freezing. Sketch what you think a
temperature vs. time graph would like like for the same substance undergoing melting. Assume the substance starts
at 40 oC and is heated until its temperature is 69.0 oC.
