Problem Set 1
• A polystyrene component must not fail when a tensile stress of 1.25
MPa is applied. Determine the maximum allowable surface crack
length if the surface energy of polystyrene is 0.50 J/m2. Assume a
modulus of elasticity of 3.0 GPa.

2
Problem Set 2
• A cylindrical 1045 steel bar is
subjected to repeated
compression–tension stress
cycling along its axis. If the load
amplitude is 23000 N, calculate
the minimum allowable bar
diameter (in mm) to ensure that
fatigue failure will not occur,
according to the graph. Assume
a factor of safety of 2.0.

3
Problem Set 3
• The fatigue data for a ductile cast
iron are given in the table.
• (a) Make an S–N plot (stress
amplitude versus logarithm cycles to
failure) using these data.
• (b) What is the fatigue limit for this
alloy?
• (c) Determine fatigue lifetimes at
stress amplitudes of 230 MPa (33500
psi) and 175 MPa (25000 psi).
• (d) Estimate fatigue strengths at
2 105 and 6 106 cycles.
4
Problem Set 4
• A cylindrical specimen 7.5 mm in diameter of an S-590 alloy is to be
exposed to a tensile load of 9000 N. At approximately what
temperature will the steady-state creep be 10-2 h-1?

Stress versus steady-state creep rate for an

S-590 alloy at four different temperatures.

5
Problem Set 5
• What is the magnitude of the maximum stress that exists at the tip of
an internal crack having a radius of curvature of 2.5 ´ 10-4 mm and a
crack length of 2.5 ´ 10-2 mm when a tensile stress of 170 MPa
(25,000 psi) is applied?

6
Problem Set 6
• Some aircraft component is fabricated from an aluminum alloy that
has a plane strain fracture toughness of 35 MPa m . It has been
determined that fracture results at a stress of 250 MPa when the
maximum (or critical) internal crack length is 2.0 mm. For this same
component and alloy, will fracture occur at a stress level of 325 MPa
when the maximum internal crack length is 1.0 mm? Why or why
not?

7
Problem Set 7
• A cylindrical rod of diameter 12.5 mm
fabricated from a 70Cu-30Zn brass
alloy is subjected to a repeated
tension-compression load cycling
along its axis. Compute the
maximum and minimum loads that
will be applied to yield a fatigue life of
1.0 × 106 cycles. Assume that data in
the Figure were taken for repeated
axial tension-compression tests, that
stress plotted on the vertical axis is
stress amplitude, and data were
taken for a mean stress of 30 MPa.
