Belle loves butterflies. She made a butterfly flower garden and planted flowers she thought
would attract butterflies. She planted pink lantana, orange marigolds and yellow coneflowers.
Belle wanted to invite some of her friends over to see her butterfly garden. She wanted to make
sure she picked a time for them to visit when the most butterflies would be present. Belle
decided to observe her flowers for a week and keep track of how many butterflies visited the
garden at different times of the day. She put all of the data she collected in the chart below.
Number of Butterflies Counted in Belle’s Flower Garden
1. During which day of the week and at what time interval were the most butterflies counted?
On Friday at 2:00 P.M - 2:59 P.M the most butterflies were counted.

2. During which day of the week and at what time interval were the least butterflies counted?
On Friday at 8:00 A.M - 8:59 A.M the least butterflies were counted.

3. What was the range for this group of data for the whole week?
4. Find the mean, median, mode and range for all of the butterflies that visited the garden on

Belle decided she would find the average number of butterflies for each time interval. She made
a chart to display the information. She then took the data from the chart and made a bar graph.

5. Would Belle’s data be more or less reliable if she continued this experiment for another
week? Explain
____________________________________________________________________________
No, it would be more reliable if she continued the experiment for another week because it would give her more info to go off
of.

6. Before making her observations Bella hypothesized that there would be more butterflies
visiting the garden in the morning because it would be cooler. Does the data support her
hypothesis? Cite evidence to support your answer.
A. After 9:00 A.M at least 15 butterflies visit the garden each hour.
B. Each butterfly only comes to the garden once each day.
C. The number of butterflies visiting the garden between 2:00 and 2:59 is more than
double the number visiting from 8:00 to 8:59.
D. Butterflies stay in the garden more than an hour at a time.

12. Was Belle’s hypothesis about the lantana correct? Use evidence from the chart and table to
support your answer.
It was false, it was the last on the graph with the coneflower at the top.
