Course Description:

This course is designed to develop students’ upper intermediate reading comprehension


skills targeting a special set of sub-skills such as finding the main ideas, and details, previewing
and predicting, scanning (keywords), outlining, reading charts and graphs, summarizing, making
inferences, and understanding sequences. Students will be guided to learn each skill and apply
them for inside classroom tasks and for homework. Also, it provides many opportunities to
integrate other language skills namely speaking and writing skills leading to general language
proficiency. This Level covers all skills and focuses on the most effective and efficient ways to
make progress in English. Each of the 12 units in the book features Time to speak, a lesson
where decision-making and problem-solving tasks enable speaking to thrive in addition to
building students’ confidence in taking risks with language. Optional mobile phone activities
help create personalized learning experiences.

❖ Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):


1. Practice the reading comprehension subskills emphasized in the activities and exercises.
2. Integrate writing and speaking skills with reading comprehension and vocabulary building
activities.
3. Understand straightforward factual information about common everyday or job-related topics,
identifying both general messages or specific details.
4. Read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and interests with a
satisfactory level of comprehension.
5. Express thoughts on more abstract, cultural topics such as films, books, music, etc.
6. Write personal letters and notes asking for conveying simple information of immediate
relevance, getting across the point he/she feels to be important.

❖ Grading Policy:

Instructors are expected to follow the Standard-based Grading method, through which the
students will be provided with as many assessment modes as possible, with a minimum of 4
assessments for each skill, and that is in order to facilitate the accumulation of points by the
instructor. Instructors will choose the top 4 grades acquired by each student for each skill and
disclose those grades in the grading sheet.

1. Speaking and Writing Projects 20%
2. Speaking and Writing Activities 10%
3. Midterm (TBA) 20%
4. Performative Learning 10%
5. Final Exam 40%

The units have been redistributed as the following, so that the similar grammar topics
from different units are taught in sequence

❖ Additional Course Requirements:

1. Students must attend all of the classes on time and participate during the class
period and on e-class.
2. Students must submit all of the assignments on time.
3. Students should not be absent from the quizzes and exams; no make-up exam will
be given without a proper medical documentation.
