Role-Play Script: Interview for Restaurant Manager

Scene Setup:

The Restaurant Owner and HR are seated at a table. The Candidate enters the room for the
interview. The Narrator stands to the side, ready to explain why specific questions are being
asked and how they assess the candidate.

Narrator:

"Hello, and welcome! Today, we are conducting an interview for the position of Restaurant
Manager. We’ll be asking questions to assess leadership, decision-making, teamwork, and
customer management. Let’s start!"

Restaurant Owner:
"Hello! We’re glad you’re here today. Could you start by telling us about your experience
managing a restaurant?"

Candidate:
"Thank you! I’ve managed restaurants for three years. I’ve worked closely with staff, handled
customer complaints, and made sure the restaurant operations ran smoothly."

HR:
"Great! Now, here’s the first question: How would you handle a situation where two team
members are arguing during a busy shift?"

Narrator:
"This question helps us see how the candidate manages conflict. It’s important that the
Restaurant Manager can quickly solve problems without affecting the service."
Candidate:
"I would ask them to focus on their work first, ensuring the customers are served properly.
After the shift, I’d talk to them separately to understand the issue and find a solution."

Restaurant Owner:
"Nice! Now, how would you work to improve customer satisfaction at our restaurant?"

Narrator:
"This question looks at how the candidate approaches customer service. A good manager
knows how to keep customers happy, which is important for business growth."

Candidate:
"I believe listening to customer feedback is key. I would regularly check in with customers
during their meal and ask for their thoughts. If there are any complaints, I’d address them
immediately and work with the staff to prevent future issues."

HR:
"That’s a great approach. Next, managing the budget is a big part of this job. How would you
make sure the restaurant stays profitable?"

Narrator:
"This question is about financial management. We want to know if the candidate
understands how to control costs and make the restaurant more efficient."

Candidate:
"I would focus on tracking inventory closely and reducing waste. I’d also work with the Head
Chef to create a cost-effective menu, using seasonal ingredients. Reviewing sales and
expenses regularly would help us stay within budget."
Restaurant Owner:
"That’s a smart strategy! Finally, can you tell us about a time when you had to make a tough
decision during a busy shift?"

Narrator:
"This question tests how well the candidate works under pressure. Decision-making during
stressful times is crucial for a Restaurant Manager."

Candidate:
"During a holiday rush, we were short-staffed. I quickly reassigned duties, with some staff
helping in the kitchen. I also stepped in to assist on the floor to ensure all customers were
served. It was a stressful situation, but we got through it smoothly."

HR:
"That sounds like great problem-solving! Thank you for answering our questions. We’ll get
back to you soon."

Narrator:
"In this interview, we used open-ended questions to evaluate the candidate’s leadership,
