Biostatistics Assignment for HO students

Group Assignment
1. The standard hemoglobin reading for normal males of adult age is 15 g/100 ml. The standard
deviation is about 2.5 g/100 ml. For a group of 36 male construction workers, the sample
mean was 16 g/100 ml.
A) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the male construction workers. What is your
interpretation of this interval relative to the normal adult male population?
B) What would the confidence interval have been if the above results were obtained based
on 49 construction workers?
C) The following data shows pulse rates after running for 1 minute, collected from females
who drink alcohol. The mean pulse rate after running for 1 minute of females who do not
drink is 97 beats per minute. Do the data show that the mean pulse rate of females who
do drink alcohol is higher than the mean pulse rate of females who do not drink? Test at
the 5% level.

2. In a ceratin population an averge of 13 new cases of esophageal cancer are diagnosed each
year. Find the probability that in a given year the number of newly diagnosed case of
esophageal cancer.
A) Exactly 10
B) No more than 3
C) Between 9 and 15
3. A nurse supervisor has found that staff nurses, on average complete a certain task in 10
minutes. If the times required to complete the task are approximately normally distributed
with a standard deviation of 3 minutes, find:
A) The proportion of nurses completing the task in less than 4 minutes.
B) The proportion of nurses requiring more than 5 minutes completing the task.
4. Given the normally distributed random variable X with mean 100 and standard deviation 15,
find the numerical value of K such that
A) P ( X ≥ k )=0.1093
B) P ( 100 ≤ X ≤ k ) =0.4778
C) P ( k ' ≤ X ≤k )=0.966 , where k ' and k are equidistant from the mean (μ).
5. In a certain population of women 4 percent have had breast cancer, 20 percent are smokers,
and 3 percent are smokers and have had breast cancer. A woman is selected at random from
the population. What is the probability that she has had breast cancer or smokes?
6. Ten independent patients were treated at Mack Hospital. For each person there is a 70%
chance of successfully cure. What is the probability that at least two persons have
successfully cure? Find the Expected value & variance of the distribution.
