Memory Management Strategies

Memory management in operating systems involves handling the allocation, use, and
deallocation of system memory resources. It ensures that programs can efficiently access the
memory they need while preventing conflicts and fragmentation.

Memory Allocation: Operating systems allocate memory to processes when they are created.
This can be done using various techniques like contiguous memory allocation, paging, or
segmentation.

Contiguous Memory Allocation: In this approach, memory is allocated to processes as a single


contiguous block. It can lead to fragmentation, either external (free memory scattered around) or
internal (unused space within a allocated block).

Paging: Memory is divided into fixed-size blocks called pages, and processes are divided into
blocks of the same size. This reduces external fragmentation but can still have internal
fragmentation.

Segmentation: Memory is divided into segments of different sizes, each serving a specific
purpose, like code, data, and stack segments. It provides more flexibility but can lead to
fragmentation.

Virtual Memory: This technique allows a process to use more memory than is physically
available by using disk space as an extension of physical memory. The OS swaps data between
RAM and disk as needed.

Page Replacement Algorithms: In systems using paging and virtual memory, page replacement
algorithms like LRU (Least Recently Used) or FIFO (First-In-First-Out) determine which pages
should be removed from memory when space is needed.

Memory Protection:Operating systems implement memory protection mechanisms to prevent


one process from accessing the memory space of another process, ensuring data integrity and
security.

Thrashing: This occurs when the system spends more time swapping data between memory and
disk than executing actual processes, leading to poor performance.

Memory Mapping:Operating systems allow processes to map files into their memory space,
facilitating I/O operations by treating files as if they were parts of memory.

Demand Paging:Rather than loading an entire program into memory, only the required portions
are loaded as needed, reducing memory wastage.

Memory Leak Detection:OS can identify and manage memory leaks, where a process doesn't
release memory even when it's no longer needed.
Effective memory management is crucial for optimizing system performance, ensuring stability,
and enabling multitasking in modern operating systems.

Swapping :- Swapping is a memory management technique used by operating systems to


temporarily transfer a process or part of a process from main memory (RAM) to secondary
storage (usually the hard disk) when the system doesn't have enough physical memory to hold all
active processes. Swapping helps ensure that the most critical processes can be executed
efficiently, even when physical memory is limited.

Memory Shortage:When the system runs out of available physical memory due to the execution
of multiple processes, it needs to free up some space.

Selecting a Victim Process: The operating system selects a process to be swapped out. This process
is often chosen based on criteria like its priority, how long it has been running, or its memory
usage.

Swap Out:The selected process (or a portion of it) is moved from RAM to a predefined area on
the secondary storage (swap space). This frees up space in RAM for other processes.

Swap In When the swapped-out process is needed again, the OS brings it back from the swap
space into RAM. This process is known as swapping in.

Context Switch:Swapping involves a context switch, which means that the OS must save the
state of the swapped-out process and load the state of the swapped-in process. This allows the
system to continue executing the processes seamlessly.

Performance Impact: Swapping can significantly impact system performance because reading or
writing to secondary storage (disk) is much slower than accessing data from RAM. Excessive
swapping can lead to a condition called "thrashing," where the system spends more time
swapping processes in and out of memory than actually executing them, causing severe
slowdowns.
Swapping is often used in conjunction with other memory management techniques, such as
paging and virtual memory, to ensure efficient use of available system resources while
maintaining acceptable performance levels.

Contiguous memory Allocation:- Contiguous memory allocation is a memory management


technique used in operating systems to allocate a continuous block of memory to a process. In
this method, each process is loaded into a single, contiguous section of physical memory (RAM)
without any breaks or fragmentation. Here's how it works:

Memory Division: The available physical memory is divided into fixed-sized partitions or
segments. Each partition can hold one process.

Allocation: When a new process needs memory, the operating system searches for an available
partition that can accommodate the process's size. If a suitable partition is found, the process is
loaded into that partition.

Deallocation: When a process finishes executing, its allocated memory partition is marked as
free and available for allocation to other processes.

External Fragmentation: Over time, as processes are loaded and unloaded, gaps can appear
between occupied memory partitions. This phenomenon is known as external fragmentation.
These gaps make it difficult to allocate memory to new processes, even if there is enough total
free memory.

Compaction: To counter external fragmentation, some operating systems implement


compaction. This involves rearranging memory contents to consolidate free memory segments
into a larger, contiguous block. However, compaction can be time-consuming and resource-
intensive.

Fixed vs. Variable Partitions: Contiguous memory allocation can have fixed-size or variable-
size partitions. Fixed-size partitions allocate the memory in fixed blocks, which may lead to
inefficient use of memory. Variable-size partitions allow more flexibility in accommodating
processes of varying sizes.

Advantages: Contiguous memory allocation is simple and efficient for processes that require
contiguous memory blocks. It has less overhead compared to more complex memory
management techniques.

Disadvantages: External fragmentation can be a significant issue. Larger processes may not find
contiguous blocks of memory, leading to wastage or rejection.

Contiguous memory allocation was more common in early computer systems with limited
memory. However, as systems grew in complexity and memory demands increased, techniques
like paging and virtual memory were developed to overcome the limitations of external
fragmentation and provide more flexible memory management.

Segmentation and Paging:- Segmentation and paging are two memory management techniques
used in operating systems to efficiently manage memory and overcome the limitations of
contiguous memory allocation. Here's an overview of both concepts:
Segmentation:

Segmentation involves dividing a process's logical address space into different segments, where
each segment represents a distinct portion of the process, such as code, data, stack, and heap.
Each segment can have its own size and properties. Segmentation provides flexibility in
managing memory, allowing processes to grow or shrink dynamically.

Advantages of Segmentation:

Flexibility: Processes can have variable-sized segments, enabling efficient memory allocation for
different needs.

Protection: Segments can be protected, preventing unauthorized access to specific parts of a


process's memory.

Disadvantages of Segmentation:

Fragmentation: Segmentation can lead to external fragmentation, where free memory becomes
divided into small segments, making it challenging to allocate memory for new processes.

Paging:

Paging divides physical memory and processes into fixed-size blocks called pages. Processes are
divided into fixed-size blocks called page frames. Unlike segmentation, paging doesn't
differentiate between code, data, or stack; it treats everything as pages. This approach eliminates
external fragmentation, as each page is of the same size.

Advantages of Paging:

No External Fragmentation: Paging eliminates external fragmentation since all pages are of equal
size.Efficient Memory Utilization: Processes can be loaded into non-contiguous memory
locations, leading to more efficient memory utilization.
Disadvantages of Paging:

Internal Fragmentation: Paging can result in internal fragmentation. If a process's size isn't an
exact multiple of the page size, the last page may be only partially used, wasting some memory.

Complex Address Translation: Paging requires a translation mechanism to map logical


addresses to physical addresses, which can add overhead.

Modern systems often use a combination of segmentation and paging to achieve the benefits of
both approaches while minimizing their drawbacks. This technique is known as "paged
segmentation." In paged segmentation, processes are divided into segments, and each segment is
further divided into pages. This approach provides both flexibility and efficient memory
utilization while mitigating some of the disadvantages of pure segmentation or paging.

Structure of the page table:- The page table is a data structure used in operating systems to
facilitate the translation of virtual addresses to physical addresses in a system that uses paging
for memory management. It helps the CPU and memory management unit (MMU) to quickly
determine the actual location of data in physical memory corresponding to a given virtual
address. The structure of a page table typically consists of the following components:

Page Table Entries (PTEs): Each entry in the page table corresponds to a specific virtual page
number. It contains information about the physical page frame number where the corresponding
virtual page is stored in physical memory.

Page Frame Number (PFN): This field of the PTE indicates the physical page frame number
where the data associated with the virtual page resides in physical memory.

Flags and Control Bits: PTEs can contain various flags and control bits that provide additional
information about the status and permissions of the associated virtual page. These may include
bits for read/write/execute permissions, protection levels, cache settings, and more.

Valid/Invalid Bit A valid/invalid bit in the PTE indicates whether the corresponding virtual
page is currently in memory (valid) or not (invalid). If the bit is invalid, accessing that virtual
page will trigger a page fault, allowing the OS to bring the page into memory from secondary
storage.

Dirty Bit: Some systems include a "dirty" or "modified" bit in the PTE to indicate whether the
contents of the corresponding page have been modified since it was loaded into memory. This
helps the OS manage write-back policies and reduce unnecessary writes to disk.

Accessed Bit: An "accessed" bit may be present to indicate whether the corresponding page has
been recently accessed. This can be used for implementing page replacement algorithms like
LRU (Least Recently Used).

Additional Fields: Depending on the architecture and the needs of the operating system,
additional fields might be included in the PTE. For example, some systems may have fields for
specifying cache settings or other memory management information.
The page table itself is typically stored in main memory and is managed by the operating system.
The MMU uses the page table to translate virtual addresses provided by the CPU into physical
addresses that correspond to actual locations in physical memory. This translation process allows
processes to use virtual memory without needing to worry about the details of physical memory
management.

Virtual Memory Management:- Virtual memory management is a memory management


technique used by operating systems to provide the illusion of a larger and contiguous memory
space to processes than what is physically available in the system's RAM. It involves using a
combination of physical memory (RAM) and secondary storage (usually a hard disk) to store and
manage data for running processes. Here's an overview of virtual memory management:

Address Translation: Virtual memory uses a mapping mechanism to translate virtual addresses
used by processes into physical addresses in the system's RAM. This is typically facilitated by
the memory management unit (MMU) in the CPU.

Page Tables: The operating system maintains page tables, which are data structures that map
virtual pages to physical page frames. Each process has its own page table. Page tables contain
information like the physical address of the page frame, permissions, and control bits.

Page Faults: When a process accesses a virtual page that is not currently in physical memory, a
page fault occurs. The operating system responds by bringing the required page from secondary
storage (such as the hard disk) into an available page frame in RAM.

Demand Paging: Rather than loading an entire program into memory, only the necessary
portions (pages) are loaded as needed. This optimizes memory usage by loading only what is
actively being used.

Page Replacement: If there is no available space in RAM to load a required page due to space
limitations, the OS selects a page to be replaced and swaps it out to secondary storage. Various
algorithms like Least Recently Used (LRU) and FIFO (First-In-First-Out) determine which pages
are replaced.
Page Dirty Bit: A "dirty" or "modified" bit in the page table entry indicates whether the contents
of a page have been modified since it was loaded into memory. This helps the OS manage write-
back policies.

Swap Space: A designated area on the secondary storage (disk) is reserved for storing pages that
are not currently in physical memory. This area is referred to as "swap space."

Memory Protection: Virtual memory provides memory protection by isolating processes from
each other. Processes cannot directly access each other's memory, preventing unauthorized
access and enhancing system stability.

Advantages: Virtual memory allows efficient utilization of physical memory, enables the
execution of large programs even when physical memory is limited, simplifies memory
management, and provides memory protection.

Disadvantages: Accessing data in secondary storage is slower than accessing RAM, so


excessive paging can lead to performance degradation (thrashing). Additionally, managing the
page table and handling page faults adds some overhead to the system.

Overall, virtual memory management is a crucial component of modern operating systems,


enabling multitasking, efficient memory usage, and a seamless user experience even when
dealing with memory-intensive applications.

Demand Paging:- Demand paging is a memory management technique used in operating


systems, especially those that implement virtual memory, to optimize memory usage by loading
only the necessary pages of a program into RAM when they are actually needed. This approach
helps conserve memory space and reduce the time it takes to start and run programs. Here's how
demand paging works:

Initial Loading: When a program starts execution, not all of its pages are immediately loaded
into physical memory (RAM). Only a subset of the program's pages, usually including the initial
pages needed for program execution, are loaded initially.

Page Faults: As the program runs and accesses data that resides in pages not currently in
physical memory, a page fault occurs. This means that the requested page is not in RAM and
must be brought into memory from secondary storage (such as the hard disk).

Page Replacement:If there is no free space in physical memory to accommodate the required
page, the operating system selects a victim page to be swapped out to secondary storage. This is
often determined by page replacement algorithms like Least Recently Used (LRU) or other
strategies.

Benefits of Demand Paging:

Reduced Memory Footprint: Demand paging allows programs to start with a smaller memory
footprint since only the necessary pages are loaded initially.

Faster Program Start: Programs start faster because the entire program doesn't need to be
loaded into memory before execution begins.
Efficient Memory Usage: Only the actively used pages are loaded into memory, leading to
more efficient memory utilization.

Better Multitasking:Demand paging enables the system to run more programs concurrently
without running out of physical memory.

Challenges of Demand Paging:

Page Fault Overhead:Page faults can introduce a performance overhead due to the time it takes
to bring pages from secondary storage into memory.

Thrashing: If the system spends too much time swapping pages in and out of memory due to
excessive page faults, performance can suffer. This condition is known as thrashing.

I/O Bottleneck: Frequent page faults can lead to heavy I/O operations, which may saturate the
storage subsystem.

Optimizations: Operating systems employ various techniques to optimize demand paging,


including pre-fetching (loading adjacent pages in anticipation of their use), using smarter page
replacement algorithms, and employing read-ahead strategies to reduce page fault delays.

Demand paging strikes a balance between memory efficiency and performance by loading pages
only when they are needed. It is a key component of virtual memory systems that allow modern
computers to run large programs efficiently and support multitasking.

Copy on Write:- Copy-on-write (COW) is a memory management technique used in operating


systems to optimize memory usage and improve the efficiency of processes that create new
processes or fork themselves. COW is commonly used in scenarios where a parent process
creates a child process and both processes initially share the same memory pages. Here's how
copy-on-write works:
Initial Sharing:When a parent process creates a child process (using a system call like `fork()` in
Unix-like systems), the child process is initially a duplicate of the parent process. This includes
sharing the same memory pages.

Page Protection: The operating system sets the memory protection of the shared pages to "read-
only" for both the parent and child processes. This prevents either process from modifying the
shared pages.

Copy Trigger: If either the parent or child process attempts to modify a shared memory page
(by writing to it), a page fault occurs due to the read-only protection. This page fault triggers the
COW mechanism.

Page Duplication: In response to the page fault, the operating system creates a duplicate (copy)
of the modified page, allocating a new physical memory page for it. The content of the original
page is copied to the new page.

Updating Pointers:The page tables of both the parent and child processes are updated to point to
their respective copies of the modified page.

Independent Copies: After the COW operation, the parent and child processes have separate and
independent copies of the previously shared memory page. This allows them to modify the data
without affecting each other.

Advantages of Copy-on-Write:

Efficiency: COW reduces memory usage and improves performance by avoiding unnecessary
copying of memory pages during process creation.

Optimization for Forking COW is particularly useful when a process forks itself or creates a
child process, as it avoids the overhead of duplicating memory unnecessarily.

Use Cases:

Process Forking: When a parent process forks a child process, COW ensures that memory is
shared efficiently between the parent and child until one of them modifies the memory.
Exec Functions: In Unix-like systems, when a process calls the `exec()` family of functions to
replace its program with another, COW helps optimize memory usage by deferring the actual
copying of memory pages until necessary.

COW is a valuable technique for optimizing memory usage and improving the efficiency of
process creation and duplication. It allows processes to share memory efficiently while
maintaining independence when modifications are made.

Page Replacement:- Page replacement is a crucial aspect of virtual memory management in


operating systems. When a process accesses a page that is not currently in physical memory
(RAM), a page fault occurs, triggering the need to bring that page into memory. However, if
there is no available space in physical memory, the operating system needs to decide which page
to evict (remove) from memory to make room for the new page. This process of selecting a page
to remove from memory is known as page replacement. Several algorithms are used to make this
decision, each with its own trade-offs. Here are a few common page replacement algorithms.

Optimal Page Replacement: This theoretical algorithm replaces the page that will not be used
for the longest period of time in the future. While optimal, it's not practical as it requires future
knowledge of page accesses, which is impossible to predict accurately.

FIFO (First-In-First-Out): This algorithm replaces the oldest page in memory, assuming that
the pages that have been in memory the longest are less likely to be needed soon. However,
FIFO can suffer from the "Belady's Anomaly," where increasing the number of frames doesn't
necessarily lead to fewer page faults.

Example 1: Consider page reference string 1, 3, 0, 3, 5, 6, 3 with 3 page frames.Find the number
of page faults.
Initially, all slots are empty, so when 1, 3, 0 came they are allocated to the empty slots —> 3
Page Faults.
when 3 comes, it is already in memory so —> 0 Page Faults. Then 5 comes, it is not available in
memory so it replaces the oldest page slot i.e 1. —>1 Page Fault. 6 comes, it is also not available
in memory so it replaces the oldest page slot i.e 3 —>1 Page Fault. Finally, when 3 come it is not
available so it replaces 0 1 page fault.

Belady’s anomaly proves that it is possible to have more page faults when increasing the number
of page frames while using the First in First Out (FIFO) page replacement algorithm. For
example, if we consider reference strings 3, 2, 1, 0, 3, 2, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, 4, and 3 slots, we get 9 total
page faults, but if we increase slots to 4, we get 10-page faults.

LRU (Least Recently Used): LRU replaces the page that has not been used for the longest time.
It requires maintaining a record of the order in which pages were used, which can be complex
and resource-intensive, especially in large systems.

Example-3: Consider the page reference string 7, 0, 1, 2, 0, 3, 0, 4, 2, 3, 0, 3, 2, 3 with 4 page


frames. Find number of page faults.

Initially, all slots are empty, so when 7 0 1 2 are allocated to the empty slots —> 4 Page faults
0 is already their so —> 0 Page fault. when 3 came it will take the place of 7 because it is least
recently used —>1 Page fault
0 is already in memory so —> 0 Page fault.
4 will takes place of 1 —> 1 Page Fault
Now for the further page reference string —> 0 Page fault because they are already available in
the memory.

LFU (Least Frequently Used): LFU replaces the page that has been used the least number of
times. It's based on the assumption that pages that are used less frequently are less likely to be
needed in the near future.
MFU (Most Frequently Used):This algorithm replaces the page that has been used the most
number of times. The idea is that pages that are heavily used have a higher chance of continuing
to be used.

Random Page Replacement: This approach randomly selects a page for replacement. While
simple, it doesn't consider the history of page usage and may not result in optimal performance.

Second Chance (Clock) Algorithm: This is an enhanced version of FIFO that gives each page a
"second chance." When a page needs to be replaced, the algorithm checks if it has been accessed
recently. If it has, it's given a "second chance" and not replaced; otherwise, it's evicted.

The choice of a page replacement algorithm depends on various factors, including the system's
workload, the number of available memory frames, and the characteristics of the running
processes. There's no one-size-fits-all solution, and different algorithms may perform better in
different scenarios. The goal is to minimize the number of page faults and ensure efficient use of
available memory.

Allocation of Frames:- The allocation of frames, also known as frame allocation, is a key
component of memory management in operating systems, particularly in systems that use paging
or segmentation for memory organization. It involves distributing available physical memory
(RAM) among different processes and their respective pages or segments. The allocation of
frames aims to ensure efficient memory utilization while minimizing the occurrence of page
faults and improving overall system performance.

Here are a few common approaches to frame allocation:

Equal Allocation:In this approach, physical memory is divided equally among all active
processes. Each process gets an equal number of frames, regardless of its size or memory
requirements. This method ensures fairness but might not be optimal for processes with varying
memory needs.

Proportional Allocation:In this approach, the allocation of frames is proportional to the size or
memory requirements of each process. Larger processes get more frames, while smaller ones get
fewer frames. This method aims to allocate resources based on the needs of each process.

Priority-Based Allocation: In systems where processes have different priorities, frames can be
allocated based on these priorities. Higher-priority processes may receive more frames to ensure
that critical tasks are adequately supported.

Global vs. Local Allocation: In a global frame allocation scheme, all frames are available for
allocation to any process. In a local allocation scheme, each process can only use a subset of
available frames. This can enhance isolation between processes but might lead to suboptimal
memory utilization.

Fixed vs. Variable Partitioning: In systems that use fixed-size partitions for memory allocation,
the available memory is divided into equal-sized partitions. In variable partitioning, processes are
allocated memory based on their size. This approach aims to accommodate processes of varying
sizes efficiently.
Buddy System: The buddy system is often used for partitioning memory into fixed-size blocks.
When a process requires a block of memory, the system assigns a block that is twice the size of
what the process needs. If that block is too large, it's split into two equal-sized "buddies." This
method can help manage fragmentation efficiently.

Best Fit, Worst Fit, First Fit: These allocation strategies determine which available memory
block is assigned to a process. Best fit selects the smallest block that fits the process, worst fit
selects the largest block, and first fit selects the first block that meets the requirements. Each
strategy has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of fragmentation and speed.

The choice of frame allocation strategy depends on factors such as the system's workload, the
characteristics of the processes running, and the goals of memory management (e.g., minimizing
fragmentation, optimizing resource utilization, etc.). An effective frame allocation strategy helps
ensure that processes run smoothly without excessive page faults and unnecessary memory
overhead.

Thrashing:- Thrashing is a term used in operating systems to describe a situation in which a


system's performance becomes severely degraded due to excessive and frequent swapping of
pages between main memory (RAM) and secondary storage (usually a hard disk). It occurs when
the system spends a significant amount of time and resources swapping pages in and out of
memory, leading to very little productive work being accomplished. Thrashing often results in a
system that appears to be working intensely but is, in fact, accomplishing very little useful
computation. Here's how thrashing occurs:

High Demand for Memory: When the system's memory demand exceeds the available physical
memory, the operating system needs to frequently swap pages between RAM and the disk to
satisfy the memory requirements of active processes.

Constant Page Faults: As the system struggles to keep up with the high memory demand,
processes frequently generate page faults because the required pages are not present in RAM.
Each page fault triggers a swap operation to bring the required page into memory from the disk.

High Disk I/O: The excessive swapping of pages results in a significant amount of input/output
(I/O) operations between the RAM and the disk. Disk I/O is much slower compared to accessing
memory, leading to performance degradation.

Limited CPU Time: With the CPU spending a significant portion of its time managing page
swaps, it has limited time left for executing actual program instructions. This results in a
decrease in the overall processing power available for executing useful tasks.

Diminished Throughput: Due to the continuous swapping and high I/O activity, the system's
throughput (the amount of useful work done per unit of time) decreases substantially. The system
may seem unresponsive, sluggish, or even frozen.

Vicious Cycle: The more the system thrashes, the worse the situation becomes. As more time is
spent swapping and less time is available for computation, the demand for memory-intensive
tasks increases, exacerbating the problem.
To mitigate thrashing, operating systems employ various strategies:

Process Prioritization: Some operating systems prioritize processes to ensure that critical tasks
get the necessary resources, reducing the likelihood of thrashing.

Memory Allocation: Adjusting the allocation of frames to processes can help prevent thrashing.
Allocating more frames to processes with higher memory demands can alleviate the issue.

Page Replacement Algorithms: Using efficient page replacement algorithms like LRU (Least
Recently Used) can help minimize the number of page faults and reduce the chances of
thrashing.

Memory Management Techniques: Techniques like demand paging, which only loads necessary
pages into memory, can help reduce unnecessary swapping and alleviate thrashing. Ultimately,
avoiding thrashing involves finding a balance between the memory needs of processes, the
available physical memory, and the efficiency of page management strategies.

Memory Mapped Files:- Memory-mapped files are a memory management technique used by
operating systems to allow processes to access files directly as if they were portions of the
process's address space. This approach simplifies I/O operations by treating files as if they were
segments of memory. Memory-mapped files provide a mechanism for processes to read from or
write to files without explicitly using read and write system calls. Here's how memory-mapped
files work:

Mapping a File: When a process maps a file into its address space, the operating system creates
a mapping between a portion of the file and a range of memory addresses in the process's virtual
address space.

Direct Access: Once the file is mapped, the process can access the file's contents by directly
reading from or writing to the mapped memory addresses. These memory addresses act as
pointers to the file's data.

Synchronous Access: Changes made to the memory-mapped region are automatically reflected
in the file, and vice versa. This means that writing to the memory-mapped region modifies the
file's content, and changes made to the file are immediately visible in the memory-mapped
region.

Caching: The operating system may cache portions of the memory-mapped region in physical
memory (RAM) to improve performance. This caching ensures that frequent accesses to the
same region of the file are faster.

Sharing Data: Memory-mapped files also enable sharing data between processes. When
multiple processes map the same file, changes made by one process are visible to others.

Advantages of Memory-Mapped Files

Efficiency Memory-mapped files eliminate the need for explicit read and write operations,

in the direction it's moving. After reaching one end, reverses direction and repeats the process.

C-SCAN (Circular SCAN) Algorithm

Similar to SCAN but only services requests in one direction (e.g., moving from the outermost
track to the innermost track).After reaching the end, immediately returns to the starting point

LOOK Algorithm

Similar to SCAN but changes direction when there are no more pending requests in the current
direction.Reduces unnecessary head movement compared to SCAN.

C-LOOK Algorithm
Similar to C-SCAN but changes direction only when it reaches the end of pending requests.
Reduces unnecessary head movement compared to C-SCAN.

N-Step SCAN

Divides the disk into concentric zones, with a different number of tracks in each zone. he head
moves N steps outward and scans all the tracks in that zone before moving N steps inward.

F-SCAN Algorithm

Uses two separate queues for incoming and outgoing requests. Prioritizes serving requests in the
incoming queue and then switches to the outgoing queue once the incoming queue is empty. The
choice of disk scheduling algorithm depends on the specific workload and access patterns. There
is no one-size-fits-all solution, as different algorithms have their strengths and weaknesses. Some
