The module on the Development of Data Collection Tools is divided into three comprehensive

For instance, designing questionnaires includes avoiding leading questions and ensuring a logical
flow of questions to maintain validity. Unit 2 addresses the administration of these tools,
detailing how to effectively conduct interviews, distribute questionnaires, and carry out
observations. For example, in interviews, selecting appropriate participants and environments for
discussions is crucial. Unit 3 delves into data analysis, highlighting the distinctions between
qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative methods include theme generation, while
quantitative methods utilize statistical tools such as frequencies, percentages, and measures of
central tendency to interpret data. These interconnected units offer a clear roadmap from

ii. Coverage of Module Contents

I managed to learn all the contents of this module successfully, largely due to the structured
approach and the availability of supplementary materials. The module's practical exercises, such
as designing a questionnaire and conducting mock interviews, solidified my understanding of the
theoretical principles. However, challenges arose in comprehending quantitative data analysis,
especially when applying statistical tests like ratios and cross-tabulations. Despite these
challenges, the facilitator provided ample resources and guidance, enabling me to master even
the complex sections. A critical factor in my success was the accessibility of online resources and
peer discussions, which enriched my learning experience. The module's focus on hands-on
application ensured that theoretical concepts were thoroughly internalized and applied.

iii. Comments on the Facilitator

The facilitator played a pivotal role in the success of this module by being consistent in
attendance and readily accessible for assistance. Their expertise was evident in the detailed
explanations and examples provided during lectures. For instance, when explaining qualitative
data analysis, the facilitator used real-life examples, making abstract concepts relatable.

However, there were occasional delays in responding to queries outside class hours, particularly
on quantitative data issues. This was mitigated by scheduled consultations, which allowed ample
time to address individual concerns. Overall, the facilitator’s commitment to ensuring that every
student grasped the content significantly enhanced the learning process.

iv. Easily Understood Areas in the Module

Certain areas of the module were particularly straightforward, such as designing observation
checklists and administering questionnaires. The clarity of guidelines, such as determining
observation protocols and ensuring ethical considerations during data collection, made these
topics easy to comprehend. For example, the steps for recording field notes during an
observation were presented with a practical demonstration, leaving no room for ambiguity.
Another accessible area was the logical sequencing of questions in a questionnaire, which
aligned seamlessly with real-world applications. However, despite these strengths, some areas,
like quantitative data analysis, required additional effort to grasp fully. The balance between
practical examples and theoretical concepts ensured that even the challenging topics became
manageable over time.

v. Difficult Areas in the Module

One of the challenging areas in this module is designing of questionnaires, particularly with
regard to ensuring logical flow and avoiding leading questions. For instance, crafting questions
that are neutral and focused requires significant skill, as leading or ambiguous questions could
bias the responses, thereby affecting the reliability of data. Similarly, the unit on data analysis,
especially the quantitative data section, was difficult to comprehend due to the technical nature
of statistical methods such as calculating ratios, percentages, and measures of central tendency.
Understanding how to effectively interpret and summarize these results using cross-tabulation
tables or graphical representation was also not straightforward, requiring additional reference
material for clarification. Another difficult aspect was grasping the nuances of observation
techniques, particularly the role of a complete observer versus a complete participant. This
distinction impacts the level of involvement and potential influence on the observed
phenomenon, which requires deep understanding to implement effectively.

vi. Comments on Quality of Module Material

The module materials provided are well-structured and detailed, offering step-by-step guidance
on data collection and analysis. However, some sections, particularly on data analysis methods,
would benefit from additional examples or illustrations to clarify statistical concepts. The
inclusion of references like Bogdan and Biklen (1992) is commendable, but it would be helpful
to incorporate more recent studies or textbooks for updated methodologies. Furthermore, the
language used is generally clear, but certain technical terms and concepts could be simplified or
explained in greater detail to cater to learners from diverse backgrounds. Overall, the module
succeeds in addressing the core aspects of data collection and analysis but would benefit from
more interactive content, such as case studies or practical exercises, to reinforce learning.

vii. Challenges Faced in the Course of Learning

The primary challenge faced during this course was the lack of interactive sessions or
opportunities for hands-on practice. For example, while designing observation checklists or
conducting qualitative data analysis, having access to real-world scenarios or mock data could
have facilitated better understanding. Another challenge was accessing supplementary reference
materials, particularly for statistical analysis, which required external resources that were not
readily available. Time constraints also posed difficulties in fully engaging with each unit, as the
extensive content demanded thorough reading and reflection. Additionally, technical jargon in
certain sections, such as in data analysis, occasionally required additional research, slowing
down the overall learning process.

viii. Suggestions for Improvement

To improve the module, it is recommended to incorporate practical examples and case studies
for each unit, particularly for complex topics like data analysis. This could include sample
datasets for learners to practice calculations or real-life scenarios to design interview guides and
observation checklists. Including video tutorials or interactive quizzes could further enhance
engagement and retention of knowledge. It would also be beneficial to provide a glossary of key
terms for quick reference and clarity. Lastly, offering virtual or in-person workshops to
complement the written material would provide learners with opportunities to seek clarification
and practice the application of learned concepts.

ix. Readiness for Semester Examination

I feel reasonably confident and ready for the semester examination, owing to the comprehensive
nature of the module materials and the effort invested in understanding them. The structured
layout of the content has helped in systematically covering all the required aspects of data
collection and analysis. Furthermore, the examples provided in the text and external resources
consulted have clarified key concepts and improved my ability to apply them effectively.
However, some areas, such as advanced quantitative data analysis and crafting high-quality
questionnaires, might require further review to ensure mastery. Overall, with continued revision
and practice, I am prepared to demonstrate my understanding and practical skills in the
examination.
