QUANTIFIERS

Words showing quantity or number, but not in an


exact way are quantifiers.
 I have too many friends.
 They have little water.
 We have a few books.
 Jack went to a lot of places.
 I saw a few birds.
 They have too much time.
1. FORMATION OF QUANTIFIERS
They are of three categories:
1. Single-word quantifier
(Many/ Much/ Few/ Little / Less/ Several/
Some/ Any/ Enough/ Every/ Either/ Each/
Neither/ Most/ All/ Nor/ No/ None/ Both)
2. Double-word quantifier
(Too many/ Too much/ A few/ A little/ A bit/
Some of/ Any of/ Enough of/ Not many/ Not
much/ A lot/ Plenty of/ Lots of/ Not enough/
Most of / All of/ None of/ Both of)
3. Multi-word quantifier
(A lot of/ An awful lot of/ A whole lot of/ A
great number of/ A small number of/ A great
amount of/ A great chunk of)
2. AGREEMENT WITH NOUNS
1. With Countable Nouns:
(Many/ Too many/ Not many/ A large number of/
A small number of/ A few/ Few/ Every/ Several)
Examples:
 I bought many books.
 They have too many problems.
 They sold not many books.
 I saw a large number of people.
 I text a small number of teachers.
 A few students can get into book 5.
 Every student can get into book 5.
2. With Uncountable Nouns:
(Much/ Too much/ Not much/ A large amount of/ A
small amount of/ A little/ Little/ A bit)
Examples:
 I had much time to talk about problems.
 They had too much water to drink.
 We faced not much knowledge while working
with the computer.
 A large amount of sugar was there on the floor.
 A small amount of rice was in the kitchen.
3. With Countable and Uncountable Nouns:
(A lot of/ Plenty of/ All/ All of/ Most/ Most of/ A
large deal of/ An awful lot of/ lots of/ Some/ Any/
Enough/ No/ None/ None of/ Not enough)
Examples:
 I have a lot of friends.
 I have a lot of water.
 I saw plenty of people.
 I sold plenty of sugar.
 No water was there.
 No classes are there.

1. Too / Too much / Too many
Too many + Countable Nouns
Too much + Uncountable Nouns
Too + Adjectives / Adverbs
Ex:
 I have too many books.
 They sold too many chapters.
 Jack has too much water.
 Monica bought too much sugar.
 Rob is too busy.
 Jack is too good.
2. Enough
 After Adjectives
 After Adverbs
 After Verbs
 Before Nouns
Ex:
 Ryan is tall enough.
 Ryan walks slowly enough.
 I work enough.
 I have enough books.
3. Zero Quantity
 No + Countable / Uncountable (In positive
sentences)
 Any (In negative sentences)
 None (Short answer)
oI have no books.
oThey have no respect.
oI do not have any problems.
oI do not know any boss.
oA: Do you like the red book or the blue?
B: None.
B: None of them.
B: I like none.
B: None is liked.
