University of the People MATH 1201 Math Assignment 1

TASK1

i. Domain is (-∞, ∞) because the graph gives a possibility for all x-values as it goes down,
and Range is also (-∞, ∞).

ii. A function is a relationship where each input (x-value) has a unique output (y-
value). To verify if a graph represents a function, the vertical line test is used. If
any vertical line crosses the graph more than once, it is not a function. In this
scenario, the vertical line test is successful, as no vertical line intersects the graph
more than once, confirming it is a function (Cuemath, n.d.).

A one-to-one function is a type of function where each output (y-value) is paired

with a unique input (x-value). The horizontal line test is used to determine if a
graph represents a one-to-one function. If any horizontal line crosses the graph
more than once, it is not a one-to-one function. In this case, the horizontal line test
fails because some horizontal lines intersect the graph at multiple points, such as a
line passing through y = 5, which intersects the graph at two points. Therefore, the
graph does not represent a one-to-one function (Cuemath, n.d.).

TASK 2

i. Double shaded area is the correct representation of the function

iii. E(P) is a function of P because for every value of x (P), there is only one corresponding
value of y (E(P)). This highlights the key characteristic of a function, which is that each
input value corresponds to exactly one output value.
iv. Domain from the graph is (10000, ∞), while the range is (0, ∞)
v. E(P) = P - 10000 , where, P≥10000
E(P) = 70000 – 10000 = 60000, then 60000 export is done for 70000 of production
E(P=20000) = 20000 - 10000E(20000) = 10000, then 10000 export is done for 20000 of
production

c. Independent variable (P): The variable that is controlled or adjusted, which in this case refers to
the production of avocados.

Dependent variable E(P): The variable that relies on the independent variable, representing the
export of avocados, which is influenced by the production level in this problem.

TASK 3

The conclusion I can draw if both the red and blue graphs denotes that both animals have the same
length and weight.

TASK 4

The graph depicts a periodic function with a period of 2π. Local extrema of the function are the
points where the function changes direction (Abramson,2023).

Local maxima: Points where the function reaches its highest value within a certain interval. In the
graph, these points are A, C, E, and G.

Local minima: Points where the function reaches its lowest value within a certain interval. In the
graph, these points are B, D, F, and H.

Intervals of extrema: (A, B) – Decreasing, (B, C) – Increasing (C, D) – Decreasing, (D, E) – Increasing,
(E, F) – Decreasing, (F, G) – Increasing, (G, H) – Decreasing, (H, A) – Increasing.

Difference between Local Extrema and Maximum/Minimum Values:

The maximum and minimum values of a function are the absolute highest and lowest points that the
function reaches over its entire domain (Abramson, 2023). Local extrema, on the other hand, are
only the highest or lowest points within a certain interval.

In this graph, the maximum value occurs at points E and G, and the minimum value occurs at points
D and F. These points are also local extrema, but they are the absolute highest and lowest points on
the graph.
