computer’s hardware.
Application software
Application software is designed to complete specific tasks on a computer.
What is hardware?
Hardware is everything in, or connected to, a computer that’s part of
the physical world and can be touched. This includes the computer
itself, with a screen, keyboard, and mouse.
Turn on your computer
LESSON 4
Getting started:
Follow these step-by-step instructions to help you turn on your computer
Step 1: Find the ‘on’ button. It probably looks like this (but might be square or oblong!):
On some computers, the button lights up when the computer is on. On laptops, there’s
often a light on the front that comes on. You may have to keep pushing for a couple of
seconds to make this happen, but don’t worry – you’ll soon get to know how your
computer works.
If nothing happens, there are a few things you can check easily:
• If you have a PC, make sure that the plug or any of the other wires haven’t become
disconnected.
• Ensure that the monitor is turned on. Most PC monitors have an ‘on/off’ button on the
bottom corner of the screen (see below). The button often lights up green when the monitor
is on
Step 3: Now you need to log in.
If you’re the only user of your computer, once it’s turned on it may go straight
to the desktop:
Computer Mouse
Using a computer mouse is one of the first steps to properly operating a
computer. The mouse allows you to move the cursor and click programs
Method1: Using a PC Computer Mouse Place the mouse on a clean, smooth surface, preferably a
mouse pad.
3 Make sure the mouse is working. Your computer should be on, and you should see a cursor on the
screen you can control by moving your mouse.
4 Practice clicking with the mouse. Click the primary button once to click on something and twice in a
row to “double click” on a program or menu.
5 Practice scrolling and dragging items with the mouse. Move the wheel with your pointer finger to
scroll up and down pages. To drag an object, place the cursor on it, then press and hold down the primary
button, and move the mouse to a new location. Release the primary button once you are done.
Left click to select any icon on the screen
