Assignment No. 1

Name: ______________________________________________ Date and Time: _______________________

Instruction: Solve the following problems. Write your solution on a clean short
bond paper. Make sure to box all your final answer for each item. Strictly no
erasures allowed.

1. Benzene flows through a 100 mm diameter pipe at a mean velocity of 3 m/s. Find:
________________________________ A. volume flow rate in m3/s and li/min
________________________________ B. weight flow rate
________________________________ C. mass flow rate

2. Assume the conduit in the figure shown has (inside) diameter of 12 in and 18 in at sections 1
and 2, respectively. If water is flowing in the conduit at a velocity of 16.6 ft/s at section 2, find:
________________________________ A. velocity at section 1
________________________________ B. volume flow rate at section 1
________________________________ C. volume flow rate at section 2
________________________________ D. weight flow rate
________________________________ E. mass flow rate

________________________________ 3. In figure shown, pipes 1 and 2 are of diameter 3 cm; D3 = 4

cm. Alcohol (SG = 0.80) enters section 1 at 6 m/s while water enters section 2 at 10 m/s.
Assuming ideal mixing of incompressible fluids, compute the exit velocity and the density of the
mixture at section 3. The temperature is 200C.
________________________________ 4. Oil with specific gravity 0.750 is flowing through a 6 in pipe under a
pressure of 15 psi. If the total energy relative to datum plane 8 ft below the center of the pipe is
58.6 ft-lb/lb, determine the flow rate of the oil.

________________________________ 5. Water having kinematic viscosity v = 1.3 x 10 -6 m2/s flows in a 100

mm diameter pipe at a velocity of 4.5 m/s. Is the flow laminar or turbulent?
