General
This section gives information related to the towing and taxiing of the
aircraft.
It is divided as follows :
- TOWING
- TAXIING

A. Towing
You can tow the aircraft by the nose landing gear or the main landing
gear.
You can tow the aircraft with deflated tires.

B. Taxiing
This section gives information related to the danger areas around the
engines.
You can taxi the aircraft with deflated tires.

(1) Towing

(a) You can use the NLG towbar fitting to tow or push the aircraft:
- with maximum weight,
- with the engines between zero and idle.

(b) You can use the MLG attachments to tow the aircraft:
- with the engines stopped,
- when it is bogged.

(c) Do not tow the aircraft if the dimension H is more than 300 mm
(11.8110 in.). If you do, you can cause damage to the cams that
make the nose gear wheels go back to the center position.

(2) Speed Limits

(a) Door closed and locked or removed:

_ for a tractor with a towbar, a maximum speed of 25 km/h (15.5
R mph) is permitted.

_ for a tractor without towbar, a maximum speed of 32 km/h (19.8
R mph) is permitted.

(b) Passenger/crew doors fully open and locked and/or cargo doors
open in vertical position.

_ the maximum speed limit is 10 km/h (6.21 mph).

(c) In wind conditions, calculate the permitted towing speed before

towing:

_ Measure the wind speed.

_ Do a check of aircraft stability (Ref. TASK 05-57-00-200-001).

_ Subtract measured wind speed from wind speed limit shown on
the stability curve. This gives the maximum permitted towing
speed.

(3) Approximate Towing Loads

R (a) When you push the aircraft rearward with the engines at idle, you
R must add the engine thrust resistance to the towing loads.

tow tractor and the ground to calculate the minimum tractor
weight:

(4) Limit Loads and Angles

(Ref. Fig. 204/TASK 09-10-00-991-002)

(a) In all the towing configurations, the safety pin locks the
control lever on the interphone box in the disengaged position.

(b) The maximum permitted steering-angle on each side of the aircraft

centerline is only 95 degrees.

(c) During towing, the towing angle must not be more than the angle
shown on the FWD NLG doors.

NOTE : Step (c) is applicable for aircraft that have the wheel
____
steering-angle marking on the FWD NLG doors.

(d) Tow the aircraft (slowly and smoothly) with the main landing
gear:
- the maximum towing angle in the vertical plane is 4 degrees,
- the nose landing gear gives the limits for the maximum towing
angle in the horizontal plane.

(e) Use a towbar with:

- the towing shear pins, calibration 9120 daN (20502.5716 lbf)
for the protection of the landing gear against too high loads,
R - the safety shear pin, calibration 826 m.daN (6091.44 lbf.ft)
for the protection of the landing gear against too high
torsion.

(f) Use:
- the two special fork fittings and a cable to tow the main
landing gear forward or rearward. Attach these special fork
fittings to the lugs at each end of the landing gear.
- the safety shear pin, calibration 29000 daN (65194.5810 lbf)
which comes with the two-fitting/cable set.

NOTE : When the engines are not installed, tow the aircraft

- If communication is necessary between the aircraft and the control
tower, on the RMP (Radio Management Panel) 11VU, push the VHF1
pushbutton switch.
On the panel 60VU, connect a boomset.

(3) On the panel 108VU, connect a boomset to the FLT INT socket. This
lets you speak to the cockpit.

F. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration

CAUTION : PUT THE PARKING BRK CONTROL SWITCH IN THE OFF POSITION BEFORE

THIS IS TO PREVENT HIGH LOADS WHICH CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE
NOSE LANDING GEAR.

(1) On the panel 400VU:

- make sure that the pressure indication on the Yellow brake-pressure
triple-indicator is correct: 3000 psi (206.8427 bar). The pointer
must be in the green range.
- if necessary, pressurize the Yellow hydraulic system (Ref. TASK 29-
24-00-863-001).

(2) On the panel 110VU, set the PARKING BRK control-switch to OFF.

(3) Pressurize the Yellow hydraulic system during the towing operation
(Ref. TASK 29-24-00-863-001).

NOTE : If you energized the aircraft electrical circuits with the

engine, do not pressurize the Yellow hydraulic system.

this, make sure that there is sufficient space around the
aircraft when you tow with the nose gear.

NOTE : During the towing operations, put:

- one person in the cockpit to operate the brakes if necessary
- two persons to monitor the wing tips.

wheels are aligned with the aircraft centerline.

- INJURY TO MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL.

CAUTION : WHEN YOU USE A TOWBARLESS TRACTOR, MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY FULLY ALL

NOTE : This procedure is for towing of the aircraft in maintenance

configuration only and is not for operational towing.
Do not use a towbarless tractor to tow the aircraft to a dispatch
area near the runway threshold.

(1) There are special approval procedures for towbarless tractors. Before
R towing, be sure that the towbarless tractor is approved for towing
R this aircraft. For more information on the towbarless tractors, refer
R to the SIL 09-002.

(2) Set the aircraft type on the towbarless tractor, if necessary.

(3) Make sure that the parking brake is applied.

(4) Remove the wheel chocks.

(5) Align the clamping device of the tractor with the NLG axis.

(6) Lock on and lift the NLG.

(7) Release the parking brake.

(8) Make sure that the nose landing gear is correctly on the center of
the tractor platform and cannot be disengaged from the tractor.

- On the panel 108VU, connect a boomset to the FLT INT socket.
This lets you speak to the cockpit.

- Safe working load 13000 daN (29225.1570 lbf).

(2) Wind the towing strap around the bottom of the MLG shock absorber and
the axles.

NOTE : Make sure the towing strap does not touch the links of the

MLG.

(3) Connect the CABLE, TOWING - MLG (98A09001002000) or CABLE, TOWING -

MLG (98A09003500000) to the towing strap.

(4) Put the movable taxiway plates in front of the wheels to make the
ground solid.

(5) Connect the CABLE, TOWING - MLG (98A09001002000) or CABLE, TOWING -

MLG (98A09003500000) to the tractor.

(6) Install the BAR - STEERING NOSE WHEEL (98A09003000001) on the nose
landing gear.

TORQUE the nut (6) to between 2.1 and 2.7 m.daN (15.48 and 19.91
lbf.ft).

(4) Install the new split pin (7).

(5) Make sure that the lower slave link sub-assembly is free to turn
around the bolt (9).

(6) Apply SEALANTS (Material No. 09-004) on the bolt (9) and nut (6).

(7) Put the block (4) in position on the flexible hoses and loosely
install bolts (3), the washers (2) and the nuts (1).

(8) Make sure that the dimension Y is 150 mm (5.9055 in.).

(9) TORQUE the nuts (1) to between 0.4 and 0.45 m.daN (35.39 and 39.82
lbf.in).
