MENSURATION, ANGLE AND TRIANGLE ONLINE BATCH 03

Representation of an Angle
Classification of Angles
Angles can be classified into two main types:
 Based on Magnitude
 Based on Rotation
Six Types of Angles
 Acute Angles
 Obtuse Angles
 Right Angles
 Straight Angles
 Reflex Angles
 Full Rotation
Acute Angle

Obtuse Angle

Right Angle

Straight Angle

MENSURATION, ANGLE AND TRIANGLE ONLINE BATCH 03

Reflex Angle.

Full Rotation
An angle equal to 360 degrees is called full rotation or full angle. It is formed when one of the
arms takes a complete rotation to form an angle.

Ex: If the difference of the acute angles of a right angled triangle is 6°, what is the value of
the smallest angle?

(90° – x) – x = 6°
Or, 90° – 2x = 6°
Or, 2x = 90° – 6° = 84°
Or, x = 42°

Angle Types Based on Rotation

Positive Angles
Positive angles are those angles which are measured in a counterclockwise direction from the
base. In most cases, positive angles are used to represent angles in geometry. From the origin, if
an angle is drawn in the (+x, +y) plane, it forms a positive angle.

Negative Angles
Negative angles are those angles which are measured in a clockwise direction from the base.
From the origin, if an angle is drawn towards the (x, -y) plane, it forms a negative angle.

Pair of Angles
When two angles are paired, then there exist different angles, such as
 Complementary angles
 Supplementary angles
 Linear Pair
 Adjacent angles
 Vertically Opposite angles

2
MENSURATION, ANGLE AND TRIANGLE ONLINE BATCH 03

Complementary and Supplementary Angles

If the sum of two angles is equal to 180°, then they are supplementary angles,
and if the sum is equal to 90°, then they are called complementary angles.
Linear Pair
When the non-common arms of adjacent angles are just opposite to each other, or they extend in
the opposite direction, then they are called linear pairs. By linear it is clear that they form a
straight line.

Adjacent Angles
When two angles are connected with one common arm and have one common vertex and also
the non-common arms are either side of the common arm, then they are called adjacent angles.

Vertical Angles
When two lines intersect each other at a single point (called vertex), then the angle formed on
either side of the common vertex is called vertical angles or vertically opposite angles.

Angles Formed By Transversal

A line that cuts or intersects two or more lines at different points is called a transversal. It is
therefore, there are angles formed at the point of intersection. They are:
 Interior angles
 Exterior angles
 Pairs of Alternate interior angles
 Pairs of Alternate exterior angles
 Pairs of Corresponding angles
 Pairs of interior angles on the same side of the transversal

1)What is the ratio of 8 inches to 6 feet?

1: 9 b) 1: 8 c) 1: 5 d) 1: 9
Solution

We know that, 12 inches = 1 feet

2)Which of the following angle can be constructed with the help of a ruler and a pair of
compasses? [RPL Cash 2018]
a) 35° b) 40° c) 37.5° d) 47.5°
Solution

Construct an angle of 60°

Divide it into 30°each by drawing a angle bisector
Now you have 2 angles of 30°
Divide the upper 30° angle
Now you have 3 angles of 15°
Now decide the lower 15° angle
You will have 2 angles of 7.5°
Thus, when u join the lower 30° angle and the 7.5° angle above it u will have a 37.5 angle.

a) 90° b) 55° c) 45° d) 20°
Solution

Largest angle = 180°× (7/18) =70°

Smallest angle= 180°× (5/18) =50°

So, required deference is (70° - 50°) = 20°

Another way
5x + 6x + 7x = 180

Sum of two side = 9+7 = 16

Third side must have less or equal to 16
