TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

BACKGROUND
OF STUDY Filipinos of any age come and go, and the majority of the country’s

population relies on public utility vehicles or PUVs to reach a certain

destination. Some may have privately owned vehicles but a wide number of

people in the Philippines still choose to commute. May it be cars, tricycles,

motorcycles, airplanes, boats or even jeepneys, most Filipinos have made

these Public Utility Vehicles or PUVs as main modes of transport.[1]

Jeepneys have been an indigenous, yet rather old-fashioned means of

transport in the Philippines which is regarded unsafe and is a source of air

pollution. To counter these problems the Philippine government started the

Jeepney Modernization Program (JMP) which seeks to replace conventional

jeepneys with new age environmentally friendly and efficient vehicles. These

include Air conditioning, GPS and automated fare collection in the new

rolling stock, thus making the commuter comfortable.[2]

A vehicle tracking system assists public transportation users in their

movements by providing real-time information on the locations of vehicles in

transit. Public transportation in parts of developing nations.[3] GPS tracking

technology operates on the fundamental principle of utilizing the Global

Positioning System (GPS) to pinpoint the precise location of a tracked entity

in real time. The GPS system, comprising a network of satellites orbiting the

Earth, transmits signals to GPS receivers, enabling them to determine their

exact geographical coordinates. This seamless integration of satellite

communication and receiver technology forms the backbone of GPS

tracking, empowering users to monitor the movements and locations of

assets, vehicles, and individuals with remarkable precision.[4] Based on the

working principle, these trackers are classified as cellular phone-based

trackers, wireless passive trackers, and real-time satellite trackers.[5] An

application is proposed in this paper and it uses Global Positioning System

(GPS) on Android smartphone to determine the location of a vehicle and the

coordinates is stored in Firebase Real-time Database which optimized for

syncing of data in real-time. One of the issues in vehicle tracking system is

the accuracy of estimation time. With the help of technology, it is possible

for the vehicle operators to provide accurate estimated time of arrival to the

users. [6]

Various devices have been invented to reduce the crime rate. This is

because criminals are also becoming crafty and they use various ways to

commit crimes. Now the demand for the vehicle’s detection devices

increases from time to time, it is increasing in line with the growing number

of vehicles in Malaysia. Lot of tracking devices have been installed in

vehicles, either by the car manufacturer or by third party developers.

Today's electronic technology is growing fast, making users more inclined to

using tools that can be controlled directly through their phones or

computers. Development of GPS based vehicle tracking system is an

electronic device project that allows owners of vehicles to know the exact

location of the vehicles.[7]

According to Valdez et al. (2023), electronic devices such as CCTVs and

GPS trackers are becoming more prevalent in public utility vehicles. These

electronic devices produce data that can be aggregated and processed to

generate insights regarding the service quality provided by public

transportation systems.[8]

According to Sunkari et al. (2021), this framework will be installed as

a module that resides in the automobile and central depot which monitors

data from the various automobiles. This locally available module comprises

GPS recipient, a worldwide framework for versatile correspondence (GSM)

modem. The scheme is fixed in the automobile in a way that the system will

not be apparent to anybody. The scheme transmits the area data to the

monitoring section consistently thus it can be utilized as an undercover unit.

The area information from global positioning framework uses to discover the

area and to give the data to police when the automobile is taken.[9]

According to Moumen et al. (2023), a real-time GPS tracking solution

for connected vehicle networks, leveraging IoT, V2X communication, and

VANET technologies. The system uses Arduino Uno R3, SIM800L, NEO6M

GPS, Node.js, socket, and Firebase for seamless real-time GPS data

collection, storage, and visualization. Users can access and monitor GPS

data on a web interface. Integration of Node.js and sockets ensures efficient

hardware-software communication, while Firebase enables real-time data

storage and synchronization for resource management and tracking.[10]

By adapting and enhancing this concept for public transportation,

specifically for e-Jeep operations, we aim to provide commuters and

operators with an advanced tracking and monitoring application. The

proposed GPS-based technology will eliminate the inefficiencies of

traditional jeepney operations by providing real-time tracking and trip data

analytics. With a user-friendly mobile application, operators can easily

monitor their fleet, while passengers can effortlessly access jeep locations

and schedules, enhancing the overall commuting experience.

Despite the growing interest in GPS technology for public utility

vehicles (PUVs), a significant research gap exists in the effective

implementation of these systems, particularly for electric jeepneys (e-Jeeps)

in the Philippines. Current studies often overlook the unique operational

challenges associated with e-Jeeps under the Jeepney Modernization

Program (JMP), leading to a lack of tailored solutions. Moreover, there is

insufficient emphasis on the practical aspects of deploying user-friendly

applications that provide real-time tracking and data analytics, essential for

enhancing operational efficiency. The integration of these technologies into

existing transportation frameworks remains inadequately addressed, leaving

a void in understanding how to optimize their effectiveness. This gap

highlights the need for focused research on the implementation strategies

that can successfully integrate GPS tracking into e-Jeeps, ensuring a

seamless transition and improved service delivery in public transportation.

S
will be the main subject of the study. Thirdly, poor or unstable signals are

also capable of affecting real-time data transfer and monitoring in a way that

degrades the effectiveness of tracking with GPS. Privacy issues and legal

requirements are also important because adherence to data protection laws

and addressing privacy issues are likely to limit use & application of tracking

systems. Other constraints can be expected to have a large influence due to

their cost in establishing and operating the tracking technology, including

its acquisition and installation costs.

CONCEPTUAL
FRAMEWORK

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework of the study

The GPS Based E-Jeep Tracking consists of a vehicle tracking device

and user interface application. The Vehicle tracking device is used to track

real-time location and vehicle movement, then send this to a cloud server. In

the cloud, machine learning algorithms process the data to detect patterns

and optimize vehicle tracking. The information is sent to commuters via

application/client software, which allows them to see a coming E-Jeep on

their route. Feedback from users helps to improve the system/application

and ensures that vehicle tracking is precise and well-informed.

Research Design

The research design for the GPS-Based E-Jeep Tracking will,

therefore, be a developmental research design. It is the intention of this

study to not only advance on the development of a GPS tracking system for

e-Jeeps but to also focus on increasing the efficiency of tracking routes,

obtaining real time position information and improving the tracking

accuracy through a mobile application.

Methodology

This developmental research will entail the construction of the GPS

tracking system and pilot testing of successfully installed tracking systems

in the e-Jeeps. The real-life goal of the study is going to enhance the

systemically proficiency by evaluating the system’s efficiency in considering

current locations and the quality of the data. Exemplifying GPS technology,

the application’s primary tracking capabilities will be enhanced through the

METHODOLOG
Y research study with the emphasis on the feedback and performance results.

Data, including tracking accuracy, time latency, and interactivity, will be

gathered to support further enhancement of the tracking system.

Topology Design

Figure 2. Topology Design of the study

Data Gathering Instruments

Therefore, multi-method will be adopted to gather data for the study

of GPS based E-Jeep live tracking system. First, dispatching questionnaires

or surveys will be done to capture the level of satisfaction of users on the

usability of the proposed mobile application. This will include User’s

satisfaction, Perceived credibility and Overall satisfaction of the real time

track. Moreover, IoT data of the E-Jeep fleet will be collected to assess its

performance in terms of the geographical identification of the E-Jeepneys,

response time of devices and productivity. This requires the use of data

analytics tools to extract meaning on the aspect of performance and

productivity. Therefore, qualitative data collected from direct interviews of

the driver, passengers and transport operators will complete the study by

judging the dependability and efficiency of the system. Accomplishing this

would involve conducting a comprehensive data collection that would have a

direct impact on determining the effectiveness of the tracking system in

improving transportation services.

Procedure

To achieve the main objective of the GPS-based E-Jeep live tracking

system, a comprehensive set of procedures will be implemented. Firstly,

development of a IoT based GPS tracking system will be started to develop

GPS modules ESP with E – Jeep vehicles to enable real-time tracking of

location. This will be succeeded by the development and implementation of a

mobile feedback application where the E-Jeep will be more easily accessed

for real-time tracking and monitoring of performance. Use of operational

data will be made through analysis tools for purposes of monitoring

performance and gaining insight of vehicle usages. Also, an objective

measuring system will be designed to measure the effectiveness, reliability,

and user satisfaction with the tracking system. This will comprise gathering

information from the users and system efficiency, culminating in an

evaluation of both the qualitative and quantitative data for the enhancement

of the system with regard to the operators as well as the passengers.

Towards this goal, the project anticipates to improve the sustainability of the

service by increasing the E-Jeep transport reliability, efficiency and users’

satisfaction.

EXPECTED
OUTPUT The GPS based e-Jeep tracking has the following expected benefits

which are intended to enhance transport management and operational

performance of the organization. First and foremost, the project objectives

have to do with the creation of a functional and fully integrated tracking

system which can obtain real time location information relating to the e-

Jeeps through the utilization of highly effective GPS. This system will enable

users to receive accurate information on tracking so that they can manage

routes well and make necessary changes on time.

Furthermore, it is expected that the project will make it possible to

develop a simple and easily downloadable and installable mobile application

that has special features that allow users to track the e-Jeep routes and

monitor real-time tracking data, as well as signaling changes in the routes as

well as possible problems. This interface will also provide prescriptive

solutions for the most effective planning and operations for particular travel

routes.

In general, the output of the project is a complex tracking system,

which combines modern technological approaches as its foundation and

useful additions into actual route planning and operation, which makes it

highly useful for improving the performance of the organization. This is in

line with the global agenda of using technology in trying to solve some of the

logistics problems and enhance transportation management.
