It makes you try harder and become more sociable. It teaches you to win and lose well and no longer be

Happiness is something different for each of us.
However, there are some things that can help improve our mood when we're feeling unhappy. Experts

Right now, an important transformation has already begun and it looks like it will continue for years to
come. China is a country where the population is in movement. At the moment, less than half the population
of China lives in cities, but that situation is changing and it is changing fast.
Traditionally, the majority of the population of China has lived in quiet, rural areas. But industry is
growing so fast that there is constant need for new workers in the city, in factories, construction sites, shops
and offices. Until recently there was no need to build such enormous cities in China. But now there is an
urgent need to build, to build big, tall and fast.
Few Chinese people live in detached or semi-detached houses. So, many large blocks of flats have
appeared in the suburbs of these new Chinese megacities to accommodate the new arrivals. Day by day,
these lively new megacities keep expanding. As cities increase in size, they eat up historic old buildings and
invade the quiet villages nearby.
Luckily, China has already realised the impact that megacities could have on the environment. So they
have started designing and building new 'eco-cities'. In these eco-cities there is an emphasis on clean,
renewable energy. For example, in one eco-city engineers have just started work on the construction of the
world's tallest and greenest skyscrapers, the Phoenix Towers. The idea of these stunning towers is to use
solar power for electricity and to collect rainwater for the use of the residents. Hopefully, with plans like this
China's megacities can be attractive, clean, modern and good for the environment.

When you ask most people about the benefits of apps on their smartphone, they say they use them to play
games, surf the net, keep in touch with people and organise social events. But Jenny Harlow, a scientist from
London, has got an app that does something much more important: it warns her when she is in danger.
The app is called Safety Tips and it gives users real-time earthquake and tsunami warnings. The Japan
Tourist Agency had the idea for the app after the 2011 earthquake in Japan, when many foreign tourists in
the country were confused about what was happening and what they should do. Jenny was on a business trip
to Japan when the earthquake struck. “All the warnings and information on the internet, radio and TV were
in Japanese, and I couldn't understand.” She had to rely on Japanese colleagues to help her.
The Safety Tips app sends an alert to users when a major earthquake happens, and also tells them if a
tsunami is likely to arrive at the coast. The app gives lots of tips about what to do, where to go and how to
stay safe. Importantly, all the information is in English, and there are plans to add other languages. The

The citizens of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse take their recycling very seriously. So much so that there is
even a collection point at the recycling depot for dead animals. Located in the south-western state of
Rheinland-Pfalz, the mediaeval town of Neustadt boasts the best recycling rates in Germany.
The reason for Neustadt's success is simple, says Stefan Weiss, one of the town’s waste managers. 'It's all
about providing financial incentives and education. Citizens aren't charged anything for the recycled waste
they leave out. And the less non-recycled waste you put out, the less you pay.”
When it comes to recycling, householders are asked to sort their items and bag them into three groupings:
paper / cardboard; glass; and plastics/ foils/cans. Compost bins are provided by the local council for those
with gardens to dispose of organic waste.
Back at the recycling depot, Stefan Weiss moves on to the subject of enforcement. 'In theory, we have the
power to fine people if they don't sort their waste. But we never actually do this because it costs too much to
investigate. And we just don't have an issue with illegal dumping or 'flytipping' because we make the system

so cheap and easy to use.”

A car towing a trailer full of construction waste pulls up at 45 the weigh-station by the entrance gate.
Weiss wanders over to inspect the contents. "This weighs about half a tonne. It will cost €270 to dump it as
it is. Or if it is sorted by the car owner into separate types of waste-timber, paper, plasterboard, etc., it will
cost him just €17. That, in summary, is our system. We provide a major incentive to recycle.”

Jeff Haslam spends a lot of his time underground. He works in London's sewers - the tunnels under the
roads that carry away waste water and other, much dirtier things! His job is to keep the sewers clear. 'We
work in teams of six,' says Jeff. 'It's very dirty work. And of course we work in the dark.' He has to wear
special clothes, a mask and a helmet with a light. 'The most difficult thing is clearing the fat and oil from the
sewers under the Chinese and Indian restaurants,' he says.
Many people like to work outdoors, but few would like Charlie Radley's job. Charlie lives in Alaska and
works on a fishing boat. Each fishing trip lasts about a week. 'It's extremely cold and often stormy,' says
Charlie, 'so we wear warm, waterproof clothes.' Charlie can earn a lot of money if they catch a lot of fish,
but if they don't, he earns very little. 'I'll do this job for a year or two more,' says Charlie, 'then I'm going to
look for another job - something warmer and drier!'

Sandy Smith is a lumberjack - somebody who cuts down trees. Sandy noticed an advertisement for
lumberjacks on the internet. Lumberjacks work long hours and are not very well paid, but as Sandy likes to
work outdoors, she decided to apply for the job. 'It's a very dangerous job,' says Sandy. 'We work with big,
dangerous machines, and we're always a long way from the nearest hospital - so I'm always very careful!'

As a language student, you have probably used artificial intelligence in numerous ways. However, you
have probably felt the limitations of relying solely on technology for feedback on your progress, particularly

when it comes to the productive skills of speaking and writing. How far can a computer help you with those?
If you are studying English in a class with a teacher, the chances are you have been asked to give a
presentation to the rest of the class. It is also likely that the presentations you have given have been followed
by feedback. Perhaps your classmates did not want you to feel bad, so they said you were amazing.
However, you may have felt that the feedback was either inaccurate or too subjective. What if there were a
computer programme that could give you a completely objective reaction to your presentation?
Extensive research has helped us understand the ways in which speakers can influence an audience's
reaction to them. These include the content of our talk, our body language and how we use our words and
voices. Machines can now be trained to measure these factors and give us objective feedback to help us
improve our communication skills.
Some exam boards have already started to use artificial intelligence to mark students' written work.
Some studies have shown this to be more accurate than human marking because it eliminates human
failings such as tiredness and personal preferences.
Although performing tasks with the use of artificial intelligence is faster, more cost effective and in many
ways more accurate, there are some limitations of artificial intelligence which seem impossible to overcome.
Artificial intelligence can definitely help teachers, but they can rest assured that their jobs are safe for a few
more years.

People have been communicating by letter for at least 2,000 years. Now, however, with the speed and
efficiency of digital media, the handwritten letter is in serious decline. But have we given enough
consideration to what we will lose if we abandon the letter completely?
When we handwrite a letter, we write more thoughtfully. When we receive an email, there is pressure to
respond instantly and we don't always think carefully about how to express our feelings, often choosing to
use emoticons instead. Writing letters may be hard work, but receiving one can be one TUẦN of life's greatest
pleasures. There is so much to appreciate: the feel of the paper, the style of the handwriting and simply
knowing someone has taken the trouble to write to you.
Texts and emails allow instant communication but are quickly deleted, while letters stay around for
longer, allowing us to keep a record of our past. Many of us keep special letters written by older generations.
But what correspondence will we leave behind for future generations? Nothing. However, there are signs
that people have been writing more letters recently. Newspapers have reported a rise in stationery sales and
several internet campaigns have sprung up in an attempt to save the art of letter- writing. So letter-writing
may not be ready to die quite yet.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
In the days before the Internet, the word 'troll' had two different meanings. As a noun, 'a troll' was an
ugly, bad-tempered creature. As a verb, 'to troll' means to fish using a line pulled slowly behind a boat.
Perhaps it's easy to see why the word 'troll' has changed over time to describe anonymous individuals who
'fish' for victims by deliberately insulting and attacking people in online forums.
There are two main reasons for a troll's behaviour. The first is boredom. Trolls lack stimulation in their
everyday lives and so seek satisfaction by attempting to humiliate and harm others. As well as being at a
loose end, these people desire attention. They want people to react to them regardless of whether the
response is negative.
Dealing with online trolls requires self-control and thinking ahead. They are attention seekers, so by
engaging with them we are actually giving them exactly what they want. Instead, leave them starved of
attention. A more sensible approach is this: delete, block, report, move on.
Those who are suffering at the hands of trolls or because of online bullying can seek help in various
ways. The first place to turn for support might be friends and family. There are also support communities
which exist to help victims of online bullying and abuse from trolls. Victims should also remember that any
threats of violence made online are illegal and can be reported to Internet service providers, or the police.
Given the size of the online community and the anonymity that the Internet allows, it is unlikely that the
problem of trolls will ever disappear completely. For now perhaps the best we can do is starve them of the
attention they seek.
