1. What is an Adverb?

An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It describes how, when, where, or
to what extent an action is performed.

2. Types of Adverbs

1. Adverbs of Manner: Describes how an action is done.


(e.g., She sings beautifully.)
2. Adverbs of Time: Indicates when an action happens.
(e.g., He arrived yesterday.)
3. Adverbs of Place: Tells where an action happens.
(e.g., They are sitting outside.)
4. Adverbs of Frequency: Tells how often an action happens.
(e.g., She always arrives early.)
5. Adverbs of Degree: Indicates the extent or degree of an action.
(e.g., He is very tired.)

3. Formation of Adverbs

 Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives.


(e.g., Quick → Quickly, Beautiful → Beautifully)
 Some adverbs do not follow this pattern (irregular adverbs).
(e.g., Fast, Hard, Well, Late)

4. Position of Adverbs

 Adverbs of manner, place, and time are usually placed at the end of the sentence.
(e.g., She speaks softly. They went there yesterday.)
 Adverbs of frequency are placed before the main verb or after the auxiliary verb.
(e.g., She always sings. They have often visited us.)

5. Common Errors in Adverb Usage

 Incorrect: She runs quick.


Correct: She runs quickly.
 Incorrect: He did his work perfect.
Correct: He did his work perfectly.
 Avoid double negatives.
Incorrect: He doesn’t go nowhere.
Correct: He doesn’t go anywhere.
