THE PROBLEM AND THE BACKGROUND

This chapter contains the Background of the study, statement of the problem,

scope and delimitation as well as the significance of the study and definition of terms

for better understanding for readers.

1.1 Background of the study

ChatGPT-3.5 is natural language processing chatbot was made available by

OpenAI in November 2022. It can produce responses to text input that resemble

those of a human because it was trained on enormous text datasets in several

languages. The generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) architecture, which uses a

neural network to process natural language and create responses based on the

context of input text, is the foundation of ChatGPT, a cutting-edge artificial

intelligence chatbot. It is better than its GPT-based predecessors since it can

respond to numerous languages and produce refined and intelligent solutions based

on advanced modeling. The AI tool may help with things like writing, articles, and

code, as well as provide answers to questions. it was created and launched in

November 30, 2022 by a research company (Ortiz, 2024; Limna, Kraiwanit,

Jangjarat, Klayklung, & Chocksathaporn, 2023)

free. This AI can be accessed by anyone at any time, the result will be generated

launched the latest version of it, the GPT 4. This is an upgrade where it can process

types of data. these data are from web scraping where through the use of internet it

extracts various data on the different websites that will be given to user queries in a

short period of time. However, it also has limits, like, Inaccurate information, making

up facts, and not fully comprehending questions and the context. ChatGPT can

generate innovative coherent, and dependently relevant sentences, making it a

valuable tool in healthcare for patient engagement, medical education, and clinical

decision support. Yet, Similar to other language models, ChatGPT has its limitations.

These include a limited understanding of common sense, a tendency to generate

inaccurate information, a limited perspective on context, and possible privacy issues.

ChatGPT becomes their way to answer questions such as essays and others that

are asked to be done within the school. ChatGPT makes it easier for students so that

plagiarism ChatGPT has garnered mixed opinions in the community and academia,

efficiency and elegance in writing and conversational tasks. These can limit

ChatGPT's capabilities and result in inaccurate facts, also known as 'hallucinations'.

Furthermore, ChatGPT and other AIs provide false information and we also need to

be carefully considered by the scientific and academic communities (Crawford,

Cowling, & Allen (

In Philippines, many are worried that ChatGPT open the door for cheating and

plagiarism since a survey showed eighty-three percent (83%) of students are using

artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT (Chi, 2023; Pascual, 2023). This research will

pay attention to the effects of ChatGPT since nowadays in the Philippines, most of

the students are using it to provide information, create literature, coding, and many

more. However, the researchers noticed that the lack of study about the effects of

ChatGPT to comprehensive knowledge of students will greatly improve to discover

what act should students and educators should do.

According to Pradana (2023) The future researchers should focus on "one

step forward" by integrating ChatGPT, discovering on how computers can affect

humans to accomplish educational goal, taking actions to the changes and outcomes

brought to the educational field. also, future researchers should compare the result

of performance of students based on use of ChatGPT (Singh, et. al, 2023).

Therefore, the researchers would like to take an action to explore the continuous

expanding world of artificial intelligence by studying these problems in regards with

effects of ChatGPT in comprehensive knowledge of students. Students utilize

ChatGPT extensively since they can access it for free and because its estimated

cost variable was 0.379. These

findings demonstrate that ChatGPT has a significant influence on the digital learning

process because a large number of students choose to use ChatGPT for task

completion. It follows that educational institutions need to devise strategies to

address students' increasing reliance on AI bots (Castillo & Rivera, 2023). While

according to (Adeshola and Adepoju, 2023) Academic cheating is not a recent

phenomenon, but using AI-generated text to cheat on assignments is a new kind of

cheating that presents special challenges.

This research needed to be conducted as soon as possible since artificial

intelligence or ChatGPT to be specific is dominating the world of education that can

have a great impact on Students comprehensive knowledge. The researchers aims

to discover in what manner ChatGPT impact the comprehensive knowledge of stem

students in Lemery Senior High School. Whether it affects positively or negatively on

how respondents understand and comprehend on a specific topic that being

discussed in classrooms. This research is also vital for educators to understand the

influence of ChatGPT in learning process, critical thinking, and understanding of their

students. Furthermore, by studying how ChatGPT influences understanding of

students, the researchers can provide valuable insights that will inform educational

practices and improve learning outcomes in these fields.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This research determines the effects of using ChatGPT to the students

comprehensive knowledge. To be specific, here is the guided questions for

respondents in Lemery Senior High School:

1. How does ChatGPT change the studying method of students?

2. What are the possible reason why students are using ChatGPT?

3. What will happen if students rely their primary source of information to ChatGPT?

4. What are the possible advocacy needed to lessen or promote the effects of using

ChatGPT in the comprehensive knowledge of students?

1.3 Scope and Delimitation

This study is a Qualitative Research that was conducted from the month of

February to May, 2024 to discover the effects of ChatGPT to comprehensive

knowledge of STEM 11 students in Lemery Senior High School S.Y. 2023-2024 at

Lemery, Batangas. A qualitative research is a naturalistic investigation method that

aims to comprehend social events in detail within their natural environment

(University of Utah, n.d). Wherein the researchers used phenomenological method

as it will help to get the personal experience of respondents on how the respondents

comprehensive knowledge are affected by ChatGPT. The respondents will be picked

by the use of Random sampling. According to Thomas (2023) random sampling is

choosing a respondents randomly in a given population.

The researchers serve as an instrument for data collection (Bahrami, Soleimani,

Yaghoobzadeh, and Ranjbar, 2016). The tool that the researcher used is Survey

Questionnaire. This survey questionnaire is a researcher-made instrument according

to the objectives of this study. The instrument contains ten (10) questions that

gathers respondent sights about ChatGPT, their experience using it. It was validated

by the validators using a validation matrix to ensure the appropriate questions for the

respondents. Ethical standards and necessary protocols are applied in conducting

this research.

The data was gathered by the use of Semi-Structured Interview as it allows the

respondents to explain their complete opinion, feelings, and perspective regarding

the ten (10) questions that the researchers prepared. Semi-Structured Interview is an

instrument with combination of structured and unstructured that is based on

questions with predetermined thematic framework, yet others are not (George,

2022). The schedule of giving the survey questionnaire to STEM 11 students is

based on respondents spare time to show respect to their priorities and time. The

researchers secured the data by conducting the face-to-face interview in a private

room inside Lemery Senior High School wherein no one can have the respondents

answers. Also, the researchers will ask the respondents permission to take a video

while answering the survey questionnaire. Therefore, Thematic network analysis is

used. According to Jack Caufield (2019) The researchers analyze the data gathered

to identify the most common answer, idea, and topic that come up repeatedly. The

researchers believe that this kind of analysis is the best option to discover the

common answers of respondents.

1.4 Significance of the Study

This research was conducted by researchers to find out the effects of ChatGPT

to the comprehensive knowledge of STEM 11 in Lemery Senior High School. The

result of this study will benefit the Students, Teachers, Community and to the future

researchers.

To the Students - this research will help expanding the understanding about the

effects of chatgpt to the comprehensive knowledge of stem 11 students in lemery

senior high school it is expected that the study will provide helpful and meaningful

information regarding the use of ChatGPT in studies of student

To the Teachers - this study will play a significant role for professional teachers or

educators to discover what should be the actions needed to perform in their

classroom to solve the problems or promote the effects of using ChatGPT to

To the Community - this study provides an opportunity for collaboration between

assisted study programs to assist with examinations. But there are advantages and

disadvantages to these developments that Filipino students need to be aware of.

Time savings is one of the main benefits of integrating AI into academic

requirements for Filipino students. The capacity to do assignments quickly and

effectively can be quite helpful because many Filipino students may have to balance

their academic obligations with other things like job or family. While the primary

disadvantage is the possibility of reduced inventiveness. Students may lose their

ability to think critically and generate fresh ideas if they depend too much on AI-

powered writing tools and AI-assisted study programs. In conclusion, while the use

of AI in academic requirements might be a useful tool for Filipino students, it is

critical to weigh the benefits and drawbacks before totally adopting it. It is always

METHODOLOGY

This part of the research contains the different procedures and methods used

by the researchers in conducting this research. As well as the Research Design,

Research Environment, Respondents/Subject of the Study, Data Gathering

Procedures, and Coding.

3.1 Research Design

The researchers used Phenomenology as a design for this research, it is used for

a better understanding of the views of the respondents regarding their experience

with ChatGPT and whether it affects the comprehensive knowledge of STEM 11

students. This type of research design can be used to assess their perspective and

provide their thoughts through interviews. The purpose of this study is to explain the

effects of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT. Phenomenological study

attempts to comprehend the universal experience by conducting interviews with

subjects and examining their perspectives on their experiences. Phenomenology is a

type of qualitative study that delves deeply into non-numerical data using interviews

and observation notes (Mckoy & Boyd, 2023).

3.2 Research Environment

This research was conducted in Lemery Senior High School which is located

at Atienza Street, Lemery, Batangas. The respondents gathered after class hours in

specific room that the researchers provided which is the STEM 11 - Lead classroom

in Building A 2nd Floor. The researchers ask permission from their adviser to use the

classroom in gathering information and data. To ensure that the results of the Effects

of ChatGPT in comprehensive knowledge of STEM 11 students from the answers of

respondents in the semi-structured interview are secured, no other unrelated person

can see it and enter the room.

3.3 Respondents/Subject of the Study

The respondents of this study are the students of Lemery Senior High School,

who will provide the information in conducting this research. Researchers selected

fifteen (15) students in different sections of the STEM strand. Eight (8) Boys and

seven (7) Girls who have knowledge and are currently using ChatGPT. Their

responses about this will provide an answer to the research objectives.

3.4 Data Gathering Instrument

The research study about ChatGPT's impact on Grade 11 students at Lemery

Senior High school used the data gathering Interview. Interview is a purposive

questions given by interviewer to interviewee (“Qualitative Study design,” 2024).

Researchers used this data gathering because it can know the in depth exploration

of every individuals. In relation to this, the researchers are able to gather data

through comprehensive reading to serve as a foundation for the formulated interview

questions. This strategy enabled us to gain more insights into Chat GPT's influence

on students educational experiences, more over the data gathering encourages the

participants to be cooperative and comfortable in which the researchers believed to

be effective for gathering accurate and unbiased data.

3.5 Data Gathering Procedures

The objective of the study was to assess the effects of Chat GPT on the

understanding of STEM subjects among Grade 11 students at Lemery Senior High

School. The researchers obtained permission to conduct the study, ensuring that

researchers followed ethical guidelines. Validators carefully reviewed and approved

interview questions. To select respondents with rich experience for out study, the

researchers used random sampling technique. Before each interview, the

researchers ask permission from the respondents, emphasizing the voluntary nature

of their participation and the confidentiality of their responses.

During the interviews, the researchers created a comfortable and respectful

atmosphere to encourage open and honest communication. Interviews were

conducted where each respondent shared experiences and opinions on Chat GPT's

effects on STEM comprehension. These interviews were recorded, transcribed, and

thoroughly analyzed to identify key insights. The gathered data provided

comprehensive insights into the potential effects of Chat GPT on STEM

comprehension among Grade 11 students at Lemery Senior High School. After the

interview, the data were analyzed and interpreted. Based on the results, the

researcher came up with the conclusion and recommendation for this study.
