CHOGORIA GIRLS - LINEAR PROGRAMMING

1. A relief organization has to transport at least 80 people and at least 18 tonnes of supplies to a
site. There are two types of vehicles available type A and B. type A can carry 900kg of
supplies and 6 people while type B can carry 1350kg of supplies and 5 people. There are at
most 12 vehicles of each type available. By putting X to represent the number of vehicles of
type A and y to represent the number of vehicles of type B
a) Write down all the four inequalities to represent the above information (4mks)

b) On the grid provided plot the above inequalities (4mks)

2. A shopkeeper sells two types of chewing gum. Big G and Orbit. Each big G costs sh. 3 and
each orbit costs sh. 4. The shopkeeper has put aside sh. 300 for the purchase of gums. He
needs at least twice as many Big G as Orbit and there must be at least 50 Big G and at least
20 orbit. Let x represent the number of Big G and y the number of orbit the shopkeeper
purchases.
(a) Write down all the inequalities representing the information (3 marks)

(b) On the grid provided plot the above inequalities (3marks)

3. Ematsayi car park allows 10m of parking space for each car and 30m for each lorry. The
total space available is 300m2. The maximum number of vehicles at any time must not
exceed 20. There must be at least as many cars as lorries. If the number of cars is x and the
number of lorries is y

(a) (i) Write down three inequalities which must be satisfied. (3marks)

(ii) On the grid provided, draw a graph to show the inequalities in a (i) (3marks)
(b) (i) If the parking charge is Ksh. 10 for a car and Ksh. 50 for a lorry find how many vehicles
of each kind should be admitted to maximize income. (3marks)
(ii) Calculate the income in b(i) (1mk)
4. The manager of a cinema wishes to divide the seats available into two classes A and B. He
has the following constraints.
i) There are not more than 120 seats available
ii) There must be at least twice as many B class seats as there are A class seats
iii) Class A seats are priced at sh.30 each and class B at sh.20 each and at least
sh.2000 should be collected at each show to meet the expenses.
a) Write inequalities from the constraints listed above. (3 marks)
b) On the grid provided plot the inequalities . (4 marks)
c) Find the number of seats of each kind which will give the maximum profit and calculate
this maximum profit. (3 marks)
5. Water is draw to fill an empty tank whose capacity is 1200 litres using two types of buckets. It
requires at least 30 types A buckets and 50 type B buckets to fill the tank. Also, two type A
buckets are required to fill at most three type B buckets. Each type B bucket has a capacity of
not more than 20 litres.
a) Taking litres and litres to represent the capacity of each type A bucket and each type
B bucket respectively. Write down 3 inequalities to represent the above information.
(3mks)

b) Use graphical method to determine the capacity of each type of bucket. (7mks)

(4 marks)

c) Find the number of seats of each kind which will give the maximum profit and
calculate this maximum profit. (3 marks)
