AC PHASE CONTROLLERS
2 MARK QUESTION WITH ANSWER
PART -A

1.what are the two types of ac voltage controllers ?which

one of these is preferred and why ?
Ac voltage controllers are of two types :
1. On off control :In this type of controller , the full input
voltage is applied to output for some number of cycles
and no voltage is applied to output for some numbers of
cycles . in this control, output voltage waveform is
discontinuous and contains large ripple
2. Phase angle control :In phase angle control , each half
cycle of the source voltage is applied partially or in full
to the load. Firing angle of the SCRs is charged to
control output voltage . output voltage waveforms is
continuous but phase controlled
In both of the above two types, phase angle control is better
since it contains less ripple and discontinuities in output .
2.list the merits and demerits of ac volatage controller ?
Merits :
a)They use line commutation ,hence no extra
communication circuits are required.

b)They have high efficiencies since device losses are

reduced
Demerits :
a)large ripple and harmonics are present in the output
b)output waveforms are not sinusoidal.
3. what are the effects of load inductance on the
performance of ac voltage controllers ?
o The load inductance makes the output current to
flow continuously
o With load inductance the commutation becomes
difficult if triac switches are used
o The control fails sometimes due to highly inductive
load.
4.what is an ac voltage controller ?
An ac voltage controller accepts fixed or variable ac
input and gives regulated ac output to the load such as fan or
ac motor .
5.Give any two important applications of AC voltage
controller ?
o Fans and lighting controls
o Speed control of ac motors
6.what is the control range of firing angle in AC voltage
cotroller with RL load ?
The firing angle can vary from 0 to 𝜋 in AC voltage
controllers

7.what are the different control techniques for ac

regulator ?
Following are the different control techniques :
 On off control or integral cycle control
 PWM control or power factor control
 Multistage sequence control
 Matrix converter
8.why is half wave AC voltage regulator not used ?
Half wave AC voltage regulator is not used because of
 Only half cycle is controlled ,remaining half cycle is not
controlled
 Not suitable for inductive loads
 Output voltage waveform is highly pulsating.
9.what is triac ?
The triac is the bidirectional device. It conduct in both the
directions .we know that SCR conducts only in one dirction .
10.what are the merits of triac ?
 Triac is a bidirectional device , i.e it conduct in both
directions
 Triac turns off when voltage is reversed
 Single gate controls conduction in both directions
 Triac with high voltageand current ratings are available
11.Demerits of triac ?
o Triacs are latching devices like SCR .hence they are
not suitable for DC power applications

o Gate has no control over the conduction once triac

is turned on
o Triacs have very small switching frequencies .
12. what is applications of triac ?
o Ac power controllers and heater , fan etc. controllers
o Triggering device for SCRs
13.what are the advantage , disadvantages and
applications of single phase unidirectional controller ?
Advantages
Since there is only one SCR, the control is simple
Disadvantage
o The output voltage is not controlled fully ,sice
negative half cycle is uncontrolled due to diode D1
o The supply current output current and output
voltage have dc component . this is a problem for
inductive loads
14. why triac are not used for inductive loads ?
 For inductive load the triac must turnoff when voltage
becomes zero in positive half cycle , before negative
voltage is reapplied to triac . this negative voltage also
forward biases triac for negative half cycle .
 With inductive load, the triac conducts after 𝜋 and due
to application of negative voltage in next cycle , it does
not turn off at all
 Thus communication of triac is not successful for
inductive loads

15. what are the various circuit configurations of 1 phase

full wave controller ?
o 1 phase full wave controller with common diode
o 1 phase full wave controller with one SCR

PART B & C
1.explain the operation of triac and draw its characteristics
2.explain the four modes of operation of triac
3.explain why triac is rarely used in 1 quadrant with negative
pulse and in III quadrant with positive pulse
4.write a short note on light dimmer ?
5.how diac can be used to trigger triac ?
6.expalin the principle of on off control . derive the expression
for rms value of output voltage
7.explain the principle of integral cycle control ?
8.explain the operation of unidirectional controller with the
help of circuit diagram and waveforms ?
9.with the help of circuit diagram and waveforms explain the
operation of 1 phase Ac voltage controller for resistive load ?
10.explain the operation of 1 phase full wave controller with
the help of circuit diagram and waveforms . what are the
different configurations of the circuit ?
11.explain the various configuration of ac voltage controllers
?

controller with neat diagram and wave forms
