ASSIGNMENT 4

Single Phase HWR

1. An ac voltage of 230V , 50Hz. Find the value of average charging current for R = 8 ohm
and E= 150 V.
(a) Find the power supplied to battery and the dissipated in the resistor .
(b) Calculate the supply of.
(c) In case thyristor is triggered at a firing angle of 35° in every positive half cycle.(Power
Electronics by Dr. P S Bimbhra)

2. A battery is charged by a single - phase one-pulse thyristor controlled rectifer. The

supply Is 30 V, 50 Hz and battery emf is constant at 6 V. Find the resistance to be lnserted
in Series with the battery to limit the charging current to 4 A on the assumption that SCR
Is triggered continuously. Take a voltage drop of 1 V across the SCR.(Power Electronics
by Dr. P S Bimbhra)

3. A single-phase one-pulse converter with RLE load has the following data:
Supply voltage: 230 V at 50 Hz, R = 2 ohm , L = 1 mH, E:= 120 V, Extinction angle =
220° , firing angle = 25°
(i) Calculate the voltage across thyristor at the instant SCR is triggered.
(ii) Find the voltage that appears across SCR when current decays to zero.
(iii) Find the peak inverse voltage for the SCR.(Power Electronics by Dr. P S Bimbhra)

4. A single-phase transformer With secondary voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz, delivers Power to

load R = 10 ohm through a half-wave controlled rectifier circuit. For a firing angle delay
Of 60°, determine (a) the rectification efficiency (b) form factor (c) voltage ripple factor
(d) Transformer utilization factor and (e) PIV of thyristor. (Power Electronics by Dr. PS
Bimbhra)

5. A 230 V, 50 Hz, one-pulse SCR controlled converter is triggered at a firing Angle of 40°
and the load current extinguishes at an angle of 210°. Find the circuit turn off Time,
average output voltage and the average load current for
(a) R = 5 ohm and L = 2mH.
(b) R = 5 ohm , L =2 mH and E = 11 0 V. (Power Electronics by Dr. PS Bimbhra)
