ASSIGNMENT 3

BUCK-BOOST CONVERTER

1. Determine D, ILmax, ILmin, Iin, ID, Isw, and ICrms for a buck-boost
converter Whose capacitor current waveform is shown in Fig. Assume L =
120 μH. (Power Electronics Circuit Analysis and Design Issa Batarseh &
Ahmad Harb)

2. Consider a buck-boost converter with the following specifications:

Vo = 12 V, Po = 25 W, Vin = 24 V, fs = 100 KHz.

(a) Design the above converter so it operates in the ccm.

(b) Find the maximum inductor current under both operating modes (c) If
the load changes by 50% (lighter load R increases), determine the new
mode of operation. (Power Electronics Circuit Analysis and Design Issa
Batarseh & Ahmad Harb)
3. Consider the following values for a buck-boost converter: Vin = 30 V, D =
0.25, R = 2 Ω, L = 330 μH, f = 10 KHz (a) Determine the mode of operation.
(b) Determine Vo.
(c) Determine C for a 1% output ripple.
(d) At what value of R does the transition between ccm and dcm occur?
(Power Electronics Circuit Analysis and Design Issa Batarseh & Ahmad
Harb)
4. Consider a buck-boost converter that supplies 100 W to Vo = 30 V from 50 -
30 V dc source. Let T = 100 μs and L = 800 μH.
(a) Determine the range of D for the given range of source voltage. (b)

Determine the average input current, diode current, IL max, and IL min

Under Vin = 35 .

(c) Determine the rms value of the diode current and the capacitor current.
Under Vin= 35V.
(d) Design for C so that the output ripple voltage is limited to 2% of Vo
Under. Vin =30V
(e) If the load resistor changed so that the converter load current is
Decreased by 10% what is the new duty cycle when Vin = 35V?
(Power Electronics Circuit Analysis and Design Issa Batarseh & Ahmad
Harb)
5. In a buck-boost converter, consider all components to be ideal. Let Vd be
840 V, Vo = 15 V (regulated), fs = 20 kHz, and C = 470 microF. Calculate
Lmin that will keep the converter operating In a continuous-conduction
mode if Po >= 2 W. (Power Electronics converter , application & design by
NED Mohan)
