IPv4
Internet Protocol version 4
IPv4
▶ It is 32 bit number represented in 4
decimal number where each decimal
number is of 8 bit (octet) is separated by a
dot(.).
▶ Thus representation known as
doted decimal representation.
▶ IP address consists of 2 components
the network id and the host id.
IPv4
▶ An IPv4 address consists of four bytes
(32 bits). These bytes are also known
as octets.
▶ Ex: 234.5.67.190.086
▶ Each sub area can vary from 000 to
255 (2power8 = 256)
▶ --- . --- . --- . ---
▶ 0.0.0.0 through 255.255.255.255
▶ total of 32 bits
▶ 2 power32 4 billion addresses
IPv4 (con’t)
▶ Network id:-it is the number assigned to
a network in the internet.
Host id:- it represents the id assigned to a
host in the network.
▶ IPv4 allows 232 (4294967296) unique
address which section of IP address show
the network id & which section show the
machine or host id depend on the class
network.
IPv6
▶ IPv6 addresses are 16 bytes (128 bits) long
▶ 2 power 128 unique addresses
▶ Typically written as:
hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh
▶ hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh:hhhh

▶ each byte in turns is represented as a pair of

hexadecimal numbers, like in the following
example:

E3D7:0000:0000:0000:51F4:9BC8:C0A8:642
0
IPv6
Internet Protocol version 6
IPv6
▶ IPv6, first introduced in 1996
▶ smaller header
▶ options placed in extension
headers
▶ mobile IPv6 – roaming networks
▶ 128-bit addresses
▶ 4.8 * 1028 addresses per person
▶ Address format
▶ 8 groups of 16-bit values, separated by ‘:’
▶ Leading zeroes in each group may be omitted
▶ Groups of zeroes can be omitted using ‘::’

IP version 6: address format
IP version 6: address types
▶ UNICAST 1 to 1,
direct addressing of
an IP node
▶ MULTICAST n to
m, addressing of
groups
▶ ANYCAST 1 to
1-

same address,
received by the
nearest host
