1. (a) p~1 and p~2 are two perfect dipoles separated by a distance ~r (figure (a) below). What is the torque
on p~1 due to p~2 .
(b) A dipole p~ is at a distance r from a point charge q, and oriented so that p~ makes an angle θ with
the vector ~r from q to p~ (figure (a) below). What is the force on p~?
2. A spherical shell with inner radius a and outer radius b is made of dielectric material with polarization
P~ = K
r r̂, where k is a constant r is the distance from the center (see the figure below). Assume no free
charge anywhere.
(a) Calculate all the bound charges.
(b) Use Gauss’s law for electric fields to calculate the electric field in all the three regions.
(c) Use Gauss’s law for electric displacement to calculate the electric field in all the three regions.
3. A certain coaxial cable consists of a copper wire, radius a, surrounded by a concentric copper tube
of inner radius c. The space between is partially filled (from b out to c) with material of dielectric
constant r (see the figure below). Find the capacitance per unit length of the cable.
4. A sphere of linear dielectric material has embedded in it a uniform free charge density ρ. Find the
potential at the center of the sphere (relative to infinity), if its radius is R and the dielectric constant
is r .
5. Consider the situation shown in the figure below. The region of space with x < 0 is uniformly filled with
~ = (1−x)x̂+2ŷ+3ẑ.
a dielectric of permittivity = 30 and has the electric field in the region given by E
x > 0 region is the vacuum. Assume no free surface charge on the boundary at x = 0.
(a) Calculate the electric field E(0+ , y, z) in the vacuum region at x = 0+ (i.e., very close to the
boundary at x = 0 in the vacuum region).
(ii) Calculate the polarization and find the resulting bound charge densities.
6. A dielectric cube of side a, centered at the origin, carries a polarization P~ = k~r. Find all the bound
charges, and check that they add up to zero.
