Binomial Expansion [72 marks]

A team of four is to be chosen from a group of four boys and four girls.

1a. Find the number of different possible teams that could be chosen. [3 marks]
1b. Find the number of different possible teams that could be chosen, given [2 marks]
that the team must include at least one girl and at least one boy.
2. In a trial examination session a candidate at a school has to take 18 [6 marks]
examination papers including the physics paper, the chemistry paper
and the biology paper. No two of these three papers may be taken consecutively.
There is no restriction on the order in which the other examination papers may be
taken.
Find the number of different orders in which these 18 examination papers may be
taken.
From a group of five males and six females, four people are chosen.

3a. Determine how many possible groups can be chosen. [2 marks]

3b. Determine how many groups can be formed consisting of two males and [2 marks]
two females.

3c. Determine how many groups can be formed consisting of at least one [2 marks]
female.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
A set of positive integers {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9} is used to form a pack of nine
cards.
Each card displays one positive integer without repetition from this set. Grace
wishes to select four cards at random from this pack of nine cards.

4a. Find the number of selections Grace could make if the largest integer [3 marks]
drawn among the four cards is either a 5, a 6 or a 7.

4b. Find the number of selections Grace could make if at least two of the [4 marks]
four integers drawn are even.
11
Consider ( )= 11! .
a a! 9!

5a. Find the value of a . [2 marks]

5b. Hence or otherwise find the coefficient of the term in x9 in the expansion [4 marks]
11
of (x + 3) .

(2 + )n ⩾3 ∈Z
6. Consider the expansion of (2 + x)n , where n ⩾ 3 and n ∈ Z. [6 marks]

The coefficient of x3 is four times the coefficient of x2 . Find the value of n.

7a. 3n + 1 [3 marks]
Express the binomial coefficient ( ) as a polynomial in n.
3n − 2

7b. 3n + 1 [3 marks]
Hence find the least value of n for which ( ) > 106 .
3n − 2

8. The coefficient of 8 [6 marks]
x2 in the expansion of ( 1x + 5x) is equal to the
7
coefficient of x4 in the expansion of (a + 5x) , a ∈ R. Find the value of a .

9a. 2 [1 mark]
Expand and simplify (1 − √3) .

15∘ 60∘ − 45∘ cos(15∘ )

9b. By writing 15∘ as 60∘ − 45∘ find the value of cos(15∘ ). [3 marks]

The following diagram shows the triangle ABC where AB = 2, AC = √2 and

^ = 15∘ .
BAC

9c. Find BC in the form a + √b where a, b ∈ Z. [4 marks]

(1 + )n ⩾3
Consider the expansion of (1 + x)n in ascending powers of x, where n ⩾ 3.

The coefficients of the second, third and fourth terms of the expansion are
consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence.

10. (i) Show that n3 − 9n2 + 14n = 0. [6 marks]

(ii) Hence find the value of n.
