InnoWave™ Eco ®

1 General Information

1.1 Intended use of equipment

The STERIS InnoWave™ Eco Ultrasonic Cleaner is designed to provide external
cleaning (remove tissue, blood, and other contaminants) from a variety of reusable
surgical instruments. The equipment uses sonic irrigation (ultrasonic cavitation) to
clean instruments.

1.2 Equipment description

The InnoWave™ Eco Ultrasonic Cleaner has stand-alone ultrasonic cleaning.

The user loads instruments into standard basket and places it into unit. Wash
temperature and wash time can be manually set by user. Water and detergent are
added manually by user. Ultrasonics degas tank by pulsing on and off to remove any
dissolved air. This is followed by a period of ultrasonics to dislodge material from
instruments. Instruments are removed from unit for manual rinsing and sterilization.

During wash cycle, parameters are reported at key stages of process. The on-board
cycle log can be download via USB flash drive. The unit is designed to perform within
strict and carefully controlled tolerances. If unexpected condition occurs during wash
cycle, system will abort cycle and report an error.

1.3 Additional accessories

A range of STERIS approved accessories including replacement parts and
consumables may be purchased from your supplier. The use of these compatible
STERIS approved products will ensure continued and reliable operation of your
machine.

Using non-recommended chemicals, accessories, and

replacement parts may cause damage to the machine and could
void both your warranty and guarantee of performance

5.6 Loading instruments for cleaning into basket

CAUTION - Instrument selection

• Always confirm compatibility with the instrument manufacturer.

• Always refer to instrument manufacturer instructions prior to placing in

InnoWave™ Eco Ultrasonic Cleaner.

CAUTION - Instrument loading precautions

• Do not drop items into wash tank as this could damage the ultrasonic
transducers.

• Do not place items directly into wash tank or allow them to make contact with
tank sides or bottom.

• Do not load basket with instruments pointing at lid or water level sensor.

• Do not overload basket.

• Always open box-jointed instruments.

• Always disassemble instruments that are designed to be taken apart.

1. If Basket is inside unit, follow instructions in 5.13: Removing basket (page 44) to
remove Basket.
2. Take Basket to a loading area away from unit.
3. Place instruments in Basket observing Instrument Selection and Instrument
Loading Precautions above.
4. Make sure instruments cannot fall through bottom of Basket.

CAUTION - Burn hazard

Since temperatures within unit can reach +60 °C (+140 °F) during and after
operation, take care when opening lid at end of cycle. Allow sufficient time for items
to cool before handling, cleaning, or maintenance procedures.

When removing basket from unit with full tank of hot water, make sure gloves are
suitably rated for thermal protection. Alternatively, wait until water temperature is
below safe limit for PPE used.

5.9 Tank water temperature

Water temperature inside Tank must remain within limits defined by wash cycle
temperature and maximum operating temperature.

5.9.1 Minimum tank water temperature limit

The minimum permitted temperature for tank water is 24 °C (43.2 °F) below
temperature set for wash cycle. For example, if temperature for wash cycle is set to
+50 °C (+122 °F), water in tank must be above +26 °C (+78.8 °F) during operation. If
wash cycle is attempted with tank water below this temperature, unit will abort with
error code 12 (low temperature water). Tank water that is colder than minimum
temperature limit should be drained, and tank refilled.

5.9.2 Maximum tank water temperature limit

The maximum permitted temperature for tank water is +60 °C (+140 °F). Water above
this temperature should not be used in unit. If wash cycle is attempted with tank water
above this temperature, unit will abort with error code 23 (water temperature too high).
Tank water that is hotter than maximum permitted temperature should be drained, and
tank refilled.

5.9.3 Effect of sonics on tank water temperature

Sonic activity during degas and wash stages of cycle can increase temperature of tank
water at rate of 0.5 °C/min. (0.9 °F/min.). Setting hot wash cycle with long degas and
wash stages can result in tank water heating to above maximum permitted
temperature. The unit will abort with error code 23 (water temperature too high). Tank
water should be drained and wash cycle parameters changed to reduce degas/wash
periods and/or wash temperature.

WARNING - Chemical burn and/or eye injury hazard

Detergents are caustic and can cause adverse effects to exposed tissues. Do not
get in eyes, on skin or attempt to consume orally.

Read and follow precautions and instructions on detergent label and in Safety Data
Sheet (SDS) prior to handling chemical, refilling chemical containers or servicing
chemical injection pumps and lines.

Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever handling

chemicals or servicing chemical injection pumps and lines. This should include
plastic gloves, goggles or full-face visor, and disposable plastic apron. Wear
appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever removing baskets or
parts from tank.

In instances of body contact with chemical, always follow emergency procedure

given in that chemical's SDS or call emergency services.

Guidelines to be followed in case of emergency caused by chemical contact should

be prominently displayed near the equipment.

The Please Fill Tank - Open Lid screen (Image 5.8) only appears after 5.8: Setting

5.13 Removing basket

CAUTION - Burn hazard

Since temperatures within unit can reach +60 °C (+140 °F) during and after
operation, take care when opening lid at end of cycle. Allow sufficient time for items
to cool before handling, cleaning, or maintenance procedures.

When removing basket from unit with full tank of hot water, make sure gloves are
suitably rated for thermal protection. Alternatively, wait until water temperature is
below safe limit for PPE used.

WARNING - Chemical burn and/or eye injury hazard

Chemicals are caustic and can cause adverse effects to exposed tissues. Do not
get in eyes, on skin or attempt to consume orally.

Read and follow precautions and instructions on chemical label and in Safety Data

8 Routine Maintenance

8.1 Important safety information:

• Before performing any maintenance, make sure mains power is disconnected.

• Follow recommended safety precautions for cleaning products in use.

• It is recommended that Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is worn during

loading/unloading, and cleaning or decontaminating equipment. This must include
apron, gloves, and eye-protection.

• For cleaning internal and external surfaces, a disinfectant cleaner such as isopropyl
alcohol or a household kitchen cleaner can be used, provided it is marked as a
DISINFECTANT cleaner.

• Use non-abrasive cleaners for cleaning internal and external surfaces of unit. Follow
directions on container and rub in back-and-forth motion in same direction as
surface grain. Abrasive cleaners damage stainless steel. Cleaner rubbed in circular
motion, or applied with wire brush or steel wool will scratch and dull stainless steel.

• In the interests of health and safety, all medical washers should be cleaned on a
weekly basis as part of a routine maintenance program. This will ensure machine is
safe for operators and maintenance personnel. To keep your machine operating
within design parameters, the following checks must be performed on a regular
basis. Please note that completion of these checks is not a substitute for regular
servicing and maintenance by a suitably qualified technician.

• All maintenance procedures should be carried out in a well-lit environment,

recommended minimum lighting level is 500 lx (46.5 foot-candle).
