20
1. Datasets

A dataset in is a structured collection of data that serves as the foundation for analysis and
visualization. It includes tables, relationships, and various components such as calculated
columns and measures. Datasets can be imported from external sources or created within
Power BI using Power Query for data transformation. The data model within Power BI
organizes and structures datasets, allowing users to define relationships between tables
and perform advanced analytics. Datasets can be stored in the cloud using the Power BI
Service or on-premises with Power BI Report Server. Regular data refreshes ensure that
the information remains current, supporting accurate reporting and visualization.

21
2. Reports

A report BI is a comprehensive collection of visualizations, charts, and tables that provide

4. Tiles

Tiles, BI are individual components within a dashboard that represent a specific

visualization, report, or metric. Each tile can be customized to display a particular insight,
chart, or key data point. Tiles make up the content of a dashboard, providing a snapshot
of important information. Users can interact with these tiles to explore further details or
navigate to related reports.

22
2.5 Microsoft Power BI Architecture:

Power BI is a business platform that includes several technologies to work together. It

delivers outstanding business intelligence solutions. Power BI Architecture contains four
steps.

Let us discuss these four steps giving insightful information about each one of them.

1. Data Integration:

Data is extracted from different sources which can be different servers or databases. The data
from various sources can be in different types and formats. If we import the file into the
Power BI, it compresses the data sets up to 1GB, and it uses a direct query if the compressed
data sets exceed more than 1GB. Then the data is integrated into a standard format and stored
at a place called a staging area. There are two choices for big data sets. They are as follows.

23
2. Data Transforming:

Integrated data is not ready to visualize data because the data should be transformed. To
transform the data, it should be cleaned or pre-processed. For example, redundant or missing
values are removed from the data sets. After data is pre-processed or cleaned, business rules
are applied to transform the data. After processing the data, it is loaded into the data
warehouse.

3. Report & Publish:

After sourcing and cleaning the data, we can create the reports. Reports are the visualization
of the data in the form of slicers, graphs, and charts. Power BI offers a lot of custom
visualization to create the reports. After creating reports, we can publish them to power bi
services and also publish them to an on-premise power bi server.

4. Creating Dashboards:

we can create dashboards after publishing reports to Power BI services, by holding the
individual elements. The visual retains the filter when the report is holding the individual
elements to save the report. Pinning the live report page allows the dashboard users to interact
with the visual by selecting slicers and filters.

24
2.6 What is Data Visualization?

Data visualization is the representation of information and data using charts, graphs, maps,
and other visual tools. These visualizations allow us to easily understand any patterns, trends,
or outliers in a data set.

Data visualization also presents data to the general public or specific audiences without
technical knowledge in an accessible manner. For example, the health agency in a
government might provide a map of vaccinated regions.

The purpose of data visualization is to help drive informed decision-making and to add
colourful meaning to an otherwise bland database.

2.6.1 Benefits of Data Visualization

Data visualization can be used in many contexts in nearly every field, like public policy,
finance, marketing, retail, education, sports, history, and more. Here are the benefits of data
visualization:

25
● Storytelling: People are drawn to colours and patterns in clothing, arts and culture,
architecture, and more. Data is no different—colours and patterns allow us to
visualize the story within the data.

● Accessibility: Information is shared in an accessible, easy-to-understand manner for a

variety of audiences.

● Visualize relationships: It’s easier to spot the relationships and patterns within a data
set when the information is presented in a graph or chart.

● Exploration: More accessible data means more opportunities to explore, collaborate,

and inform actionable decisions.

Data visualization and big data

Companies collect “big data” and synthesize it into information. Data visualization helps
portray significant insights—like a heat map to illustrate regions where individuals search for
mental health assistance. To synthesize all that data, visualization software can be used in
conjunction with data collecting software.

2.6.2 Tools for visualizing data

There are plenty of data visualization tools out there to suit our needs. Before committing to
one, consider researching whether we need an open-source site or could simply create a graph
using Excel or Google Charts. The following are common data visualization tools that could
suit our needs.

● Tableau

● Google Charts

● Dundas BI

● Power BI

● Jupiter

● In fogram

● ChartBlocks

● D3.js

26
● FusionCharts

● Grafana

2.6.3 Types of Data Visualization

1. Chart

2. Animated chart

3. Interactive chart

4. Dashboard

5. Report

6. Presentation

7. Infographic

8. Data story website

9. Data art

10. Further readings

2.6.4 The process of data visualization

27
The process of data visualization involves several key steps to transform raw data into
meaningful and easily understandable visual representations. Here is a generalized guide to
the process of data visualization:

1. Define Objectives and Audience:

● Clearly outline the objectives of the visualization and identify the target audience.
Understanding the purpose and the audience helps in tailoring the visualization
appropriately.

2. Data Collection and Preparation:

● Gather relevant data from various sources. Clean and pre-process the data to address
issues such as missing values, outliers, or inaccuracies. Organize the data into a
format suitable for visualization.

3. Select Appropriate Visualizations:

● Choose the right type of visualizations based on the nature of the data and the insights
we want to convey. Common types include bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, scatter
plots, and heatmaps.

4. Design the Visualization:

● Pay attention to design principles such as simplicity, clarity, and accuracy. Use
colours, shapes, and sizes purposefully to convey information effectively. Ensure that
the chosen visual elements align with the objectives and audience.

5. Create the Visualization:

● Utilize tools and software for creating visualizations. Popular tools include Microsoft
Power BI, Tableau, Excel, and Python libraries like Matplotlib or Seaborn. Input the
prepared data into the chosen tool and generate the visualizations.

6. Interactivity and Drill-Downs:

● Incorporate interactivity to allow users to explore the data further. Features like
tooltips, filters, and drill-down options enhance user engagement and facilitate a
deeper understanding of the data.

28
7. Iterate and Refine:

● Review the initial visualization and gather feedback. Iterate on the design and content
based on feedback and insights gained. Refining the visualization enhances its
effectiveness.

8. Tell a Story:

● Arrange visualizations in a logical sequence to tell a cohesive story. Guide the

audience through the data, highlighting key insights and trends. Use annotations and
captions to provide context.

9. Accessibility and Responsiveness:

● Ensure that the visualization is accessible to a diverse audience. Consider factors such
as colour contrast for accessibility. Also, optimize visualizations for responsiveness
on different devices.

10. Documentation and Sharing:

● Document the data sources, methodologies, and any assumptions made during the
visualization process. Share the visualizations along with supporting documentation
to enable others to understand and interpret the results.

11. Feedback and Continuous Improvement:

● Seek feedback from stakeholders and end-users. Use insights gained from the
feedback loop to continuously improve the visualization process for future projects.

Remember that the process of data visualization is not strictly linear, and iterations may be
necessary to achieve the desired clarity and impact. Adapt the steps based on the specific
requirements of our project and the tools at our disposal.
