2 (after Mid Exam)

Thermodynamics-II Spring 2024 Semester

Q. 1_ Ten stages of an ideal reaction turbine develop 5000 kW when the mass flow of
steam is 20 000 kg/h. The mean value of the blade velocity is 0.8 of the steam velocity
from the fixed blades. The exit angle of each blade is constant at 20° and the axial velocity
is constant throughout the turbine. Calculate the inlet angle of the blades and the
enthalpy drop in each moving row.
Q. 2_At a particular stage of an axial-flow compressor the required temperature rise is 30
K. The blade velocity at the mean radius is 200 m/s and the flow velocity is 150 m/s.
Assuming that the degree of reaction is to be 50% at the mean radius and that the work
done factor is 0.9, calculate the required blade angles at the mean radius.

Q.3_ A reaction turbine is supplied with steam at 50 bar and 500 °C. The condenser
pressure is 0.07 bar. If the reheat factor can be assumed to be 0.95 and the stage
efficiency is constant throughout at 80%, calculate the steam flow required for a diagram
power of 20 000 kW.

Q. 4_ A reaction turbine expands 30 000 kg/h of steam from 20 bar, 500 °C to a pressure
of 0.2 bar. The turbine is designed such that the steam leaving is just dry saturated. The
reheat factor is 0.90 and the isentropic efficiency of each stage is the same throughout.
There are 14 stages and the enthalpy drop is the same in each. All the blades have an
exit angle of 22° and the mean value of the blade speed ratio is 0.82. Calculate the stage
efficiency, the diagram power, the drum diameter, and the blade height for the last row
of moving blades. The turbine speed is 2400 rev/min. Calculate also the pressure at the
entry to the last stage and make a sketch on the h—s diagram showing the last stage
expansion.

Q. 5_ A 10-stage axial-flow compressor of 50% reaction design has a mean blade velocity
of 250 m/s and the blade inlet angle for each row is 45°. The ratio of flow velocity to blade
velocity is 0.75, the work done factor for each stage is 0.88 and the isentropic efficiency
of the compressor is 0.85. Assuming an air inlet temperature of 30 °C, calculate:
(i) the exit angle of the blades;
(ii) the pressure ratio of the compressor;
(iii) the pressure ratio of the first stage.
