RESEARCH TITLE: SOLAR ENERGY FROM ECO-BRELLA
Background of the Study:
The main motivation of this study is to create a unique product that all people can use and also
everyone can afford. There are millions of people in the Philippines experiencing black outs and
electricity shortage. First, the group has to define the people’s needs. A little background about the
researchers of Eco-brella will be discussed. This background will give some insight as to the idea of
the Eco-brella. All the six researchers of the Eco-brella reside in and go to Olongapo City National High
School. Philippines boast hundreds of miles of land. Going to school with our Eco-Brella will help you
walk freely and provide you it’s main purpose, to not just give you shade from the sunlight but also
provide you renewable energy.
Statement of the Problem:
The main goal of our research is to design a power harvestor from renewable resources
resulting in the Eco-Brella. As we all know, we are living in a tropical country which is the Philippines.
Our country is experiencing a lot of problems, one of which is the usual black outs because of
electricity shortage. We consume a lot of electricity resulting to a high electricity bill in our house as
well as in our country. We came up with this idea because we think that it can benefit not just us as an
individual but also the whole country. The purpose of this study is to collect those powerful rays and
convert them into electricity. To lessen the electricity that we consume in our houses that can result to
a low electricity bill. It can also solve the heat problem and the use of non-renewable energy by
constructing the Eco-Brella.
Statement of the Objective:
To design a unique product that could be present in the users with a convenient, portable and
local source for charging their portable electronic devices throughout the daytime ours. We will make
this umbrella with many advantages not just a protection from the sun but also as a mobile charging
and fan-cooling umbrella. Users will enjoy using this umbrella especially by reducing the electric
consumption of their mobile phones. They will also enjoy outdoor activities for several hours with this
Eco-brella.
Statement of the Hypothesis:
There is a significant impact if an umbrella is a traditional or Solar powered waterproof.
Scope and Limitation of the Study:
The main purpose of our study is to promote the use of renewable energy to be available to the
general public while providing shade and comfort to them.
The researchers will conduct the study from July 2019 to March 2020. The tests will be given
three (3) treatments depending on the output electricity by the D.I.Y. Solar panels which will be
conducted in our school’s Chemistry Laboratory.
Definition of Terms:
A. RENEWABLE ENERGY - energy that is collected from renewable resources, which are naturally
replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal
heat.
B. WIND ENERGY – a form of energy where it describes as a process by which wind is used to
generate electricity.
C. WIND TURBINE - a turbine having a large vanned wheel rotated by the wind to generate
electricity.
D. SOLAR ENERGY - refers to capturing the energy from the Sun and subsequently converting it
into electricity.
E. ENERGY HARVESTING - the process by which energy is derived from external sources,
captured, and stored for small, wireless autonomous devices, like those used in wearable
electronics and wireless sensor networks.
F. POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (PMS) - the process by which energy is derived from
external sources, captured, and stored for small, wireless autonomous devices, like those used
in wearable electronics and wireless sensor networks.
G. THERMAL COMFORT - the condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal
environment and is assessed by subjective evaluation.
H. AERODYNAMICS - the study of motion of air, particularly as interaction with a solid object. It is
a sub-field of fluid dynamics and gas dynamics, and many aspects of aerodynamics theory are
common to these fields.
I. FIN DESIGN - used in a large number of applications to increase the heat transfer from
surfaces. Typically, the fin material has a high thermal conductivity. The design of
cooling fins is encountered in many situations and we thus examine heat transfer in a fin as a
way of defining some criteria for design.
J. MECHATRONICS - a multidisciplinary branch of engineering that focuses on the engineering of
both electrical and mechanical systems, and also includes a combination of robotics,
electronics, computer, telecommunications, systems, control, and product engineering.
K. COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN - the use of computers to aid in the creation, modification, analysis,
or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer,
improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create
a database for manufacturing.
L. THERMOELECTRICITY - electricity produced by the direct action of heat as by the unequal
heating of a circuit composed of two dissimilar metals.
M. SOLAR FILM - thin plastic or polymer layers applied to your existing windows to help control
light or heat.
Significance of the Study:
The researchers think that if this study would be successful it would be able to help the country
and the people itself. The familiar umbrella has been redesigned for power harvesting from renewable
resources resulting in the Eco-Brella. This will solve one of the problems of the Philippines which is
high electricity consumption and will give them complete satisfaction on the benefits of this Eco-
Brella. The result of this study is a sustainable design capable of harvesting solar energy which will be
converted into electric power for the benefit of the individuals using the umbrella.
