Traffic Flow and Emission Analysis of a Signalized Intersection in
Prayagraj Using Microsimulation

Abstract

This study presents an assessment of traffic-induced air pollution at a central

rotary in Prayagraj using VISSIM traffic simulation software. The rotary, a key
intersection in the city, experiences high traffic volumes, making it a significant
source of vehicular emissions. The research utilizes PTV VISSIM to model
traffic flow under various conditions, simulating different vehicle types,
congestion levels, and peak hour traffic patterns. Emission models integrated
with VISSIM are used to estimate pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO),
nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) based on vehicle speed,
acceleration, and idle time. The results show a direct correlation between
congestion levels and elevated emissions, with peak traffic hours contributing
the highest pollution concentrations. The study also explores the potential of
traffic management strategies, such as optimized signal control and reducing
vehicle idling, to mitigate pollution levels. By providing a detailed analysis of
how traffic dynamics influence air quality, this research offers valuable insights
for urban planners seeking to develop effective interventions for reducing air
pollution at busy intersections in Allahabad.
