Enzyme Lab
Enzyme Lab
(Enzyme Lab)
Learning Objectives:
2
Do you remember?
- What is an Enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins that act as
catalysts in living organisms,
speeding up chemical reactions
without being consumed in the
process.
What does the Shape provide?
The shape of an enzyme provides
a specific active site where the
substrate can bind, allowing the
enzyme to catalyze the reaction
with precision.
3
Enzyme:
● Protein that speeds up
chemical reactions.
● Enzymes allow
reactions to occur at
the rate necessary for
life.
4
Enzyme:
★ In animals, an important function of enzymes is to help
digest food.
5
Can We damage Enzymes?
6
Hydrogen Peroxide?
- Is a chemical compound -
- H2O2 is damaging
internally, it's a waste
product of our organs
(livers, kidneys) if it
builds up in our bodies
its toxic.
7
Catalase:
★ Common Enzyme
found in nearly all living
organisms exposed to
oxygen.
★ Catalase Breaks down
hydrogen peroxide into
non toxic chemicals.
★ (Potato)

Lets get set…
Test tube 1
Does catalase breakdown
hydrogen peroxide?
Test tube 2
Does acid denature catalase?
Test tube 3
Does heat denature catalase?
