(a) Three voltmeter method
Theory:
The parameters of choke coil are inductive reactance in series with a small resistance. It
is possible to measure power in a circuit without a wattmeter by using three-ammeter method or
three-voltmeter method in conjunction with non-inductive resistor.
The parameters of a choke coil (L & R) can be measured using 3 Voltmeters. Out of 3
first voltmeter is connected across supply, second voltmeter across a series known resistance and
third is connected across choke coil as shown in figure. The phasor diagram of the circuit is
shown below.
From the phasor diagram,
V1 = V2 + V3 + 2 V2V3CosӨ
2 2 2
2 V2V3CosӨ = V1 - V2 - V32 2 2
And also the current flowing through the choke coil is
I =V2 /R= or V2 = IR
By substituting V in the equation
2IR V3 CosӨ = V1 - V2 - V3
2 2 2
2RP = V1 - V2 - V3

Three voltmeter method:
Phasor Diagram:
Procedure:
1. Connections are made as per the circuit diagram.
2. Keeping the auto transformer in minimum output position supply is taken.
3. By slowly varying the Auto Transformer the voltmeter V1 is adjusted at different values and
note down the corresponding readings of V2, V3 and I.
4. After noting the values slowly decrease the auto-transformer till the Voltmeter comes to
zero position, and Switch off the Supply.

(b) Three Ammeter method
Theory:
The parameters of a choke coil (R & L) can also be measured using 3-Ammeters, out of
3-Ammeters one is connected in series with the supply; second one is connected in series with
Standard resistance & third is in series with choke coil the phasor diagram of the circuit is shown
in the figure.
I1 = I2 + I3 + 2 I2I3CosӨ
2 2 2
2 I2I3CosӨ = I1 -I2 -I3 2 2 2
I ¿
CosӨ = 1−¿ I ¿ = Power factor of the load
2
2 2
2−¿ I3
2I 2I 3
And also the voltage across the choke coil is V2
I2 = V/R or V = I2 R
By substituting V in the equation
2VI3 CosӨ = (I12 -I2 -I3 ) R
2 2
P = (I1 -I2 -I3 ) R/2 = Power consumed by choke coil

Precautions:
1. There should not be any loose connections.
2. Readings of the meters must be taking without parallax error.
3. Ensure that setting of the Auto Transformer at zero output voltage during starting.
4. The variac is varied such that the chokes coil not to exceed the rated value.
Result: Choke coil parameters are determined.
