Technical Drawing
Equipment/Instruments
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education 9 Self-Learning Module

on Computer Systems Servicing!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

LESSON

Technical drawing is a universal language used for communication among

professionals like architects, engineers, surveyors, computer technician,
technologist, draftsman and designers. Professional and students of technical
drawing need the required instruments/equipment, materials and programs to make
good drawing since this includes the use of symbols, lines, and measurements to
represent thoughts, imagination and information to others. It is vital to know how to
take good care of these instruments/equipment and must be careful in handling
them appropriately as well as to maintain program applications.
If you take care of your tools, they will return the favor. Proper care and
routine maintenance of instruments and programs saves money because the better
they’re cared for, the longer they’ll last.
Drawing tools used in electronic drafting and design are the same as those for
all other areas of engineering and design work. For instance, it is within the level and
complexity of drafting technology and the variety of drafting and design techniques
available, ranging from plastic taping and preprinted transfer materials to computer-
aided design (CAD) frameworks. However, the traditional manual drafting techniques
and tools are still used in the industry. Therefore, as an aspiring computer
technician, drafter, designer, or engineer, you should be familiar of the procedures
and the proper use of tools.
Even though computer-aided design (CAD) systems have replaced manual
methods, the simple and essential drafting tools can still be found—pencils,
compasses, dividers, templates, drafting machines, drafting tables, and drawing
storage cabinets. The simple lead holder and the complex electric light pen are of
equal importance to the entire drawing and design process.
While sketches can show a design idea in its initial development stages, final
drawings communicate technical information to the people who design and
manufacture the product. They are made with drawing instruments on drafting
media or using a computer-aided design (CAD) system. Drawing instruments and
equipment, as well as computer-aided design (CAD) systems, constitute the “tools of
the trade” in the engineering, design, and drafting office.

Maintenance is an excellent means of improving the performance and

condition of instruments/equipment and programs. An effective maintenance
program identifies problems long before any equipment or software application crash
down. A good maintenance system presents the early discovery of problems, hence
giving plenty of lead time for effective maintenance planning.
A. Board – Drawing Instruments and Materials

Drawing instruments are tools used in technical drawing that do not get
consumed while using them. These include drawing board, set square, ruler,
protractor, French curve, and drawing set. Drawing materials on the other hand,
are items that get consumed with use which includes drawing paper, pencil,
sharpeners, brush and eraser.

Do’s and Don’ts in handling and maintaining drawing instruments and

B. Computer Aided Drafting/Design Equipment

All computer-aided design (CAD) workstations require computer hardware
that comprises a computer system. Standard CAD hardware includes the central
processing unit (CPU), monitor, storage devices, input devices, and peripherals or
accessories. An output device such as a plotter or printer is an example of a
peripheral.
AutoCAD, DataCAD, and TurboCAD are examples of common general-purpose
programs. These programs provide the tools needed to create drawings for many
different fields and applications.

CAD Hardware/Software Maintenance and Safety

• Clean dust from your computer.

The easiest way to clean it is with compressed air. Open up the case, take it
outside, and blow the dust out. The exterior of the case can be wiped down
with a damp cloth just make sure to use caution on using household cleaners,
as they can easily destroy circuit boards. For most computers, cleaning once
every year or eighteen months should be adequate.

• Clean up your cabling.

Clean cabling will help prevent tangles and stresses on your computer ports.
Use cable management especially if you have a lot of peripherals. Twist ties
work fine or you can use a full out cable solution or a cable wrap can neaten
up your desk considerably.

• Clean up your peripheral devices.

CRT screens can be cleaned with any gentle glass cleaner, but LCD screens
can't endure it. Use a dampened cloth or a product particularly made for LCD
screens. Keyboards can be turned upside down to dump out crumbs and dirt,
or keys can be pried off and the whole assembly cleaned with compressed air.

• Organize your installation disks.

Keep software, peripheral, and driver disks in a single location, ideally near to
the computer. Make sure you have got them handy before computer
maintenance or repairs. These disks are essential in the middle of a long
troubleshooting session, and it frustrating to know what you're missing until
you need it!

• Disable startup programs

It is one of the most effective methods that can speed up the performance of
your AutoCAD software and also your PC.
• Remove unnecessary clutter.
AutoCAD will perform faster if it gets more memory to perform its task. Clean
up memory by uninstalling unnecessary computer program thereby limiting
the background processes. Uninstall all unnecessary software and try to keep
only the required program on your PC.

• Run antivirus and spyware scans regularly.

Any computer that is connected to the internet needs to have some sort of
antivirus software. Most antivirus program will monitor the system for threats
in real time, so a full daily scan probably isn't necessary, but do make time to
run a full scan each month at the least.

• Clean up your software.

Every few months, check the 'Add or Remove Programs' interface in the control
panel. Remove any program that you do not use any more. Same with the
browser toolbars, free games, and other resource-eating bit applications. Be a
little cautious on some system drivers that appear in the list, and can cause
hardware to stop working if you remove them.

• Defragment.
It is good to defragment once your hard drive has been cleaned up. This
organizes your files, leading to faster disk access times and improved system
performance.

Electrical Safety

To avoid the risk of injury or electrical fire:

• Place wires and cords out of the way so that people will not trip over them,
possibly harming themselves and/or the equipment.
• Avoid overloading a circuit by connecting too many electrical devices to it.
• Never connect a multiple-outlet extension cord into another multiple-outlet
extension cord.
• Make sure that system unit or printer with a cooling vent is placed so the
vents are not blocked.
