BACKGROUND
Systematic documentation of amphibians of India was initiated with the studies of Dutta
(1997), and Das & Dutta (1998) in the end of the 20th century. Following this, amphibian
checklists were compiled by Daniels (2001), Chanda (2002), Daniels (2005) and Dinesh et al.,
(2009a, 2009b, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021) at a regular pace.
Recent years have witnessed agglomeration of molecular studies into classical taxonomy
more in terms of phylogenetics. Accordingly, Frost et al., (2006) changed the entire
classification scheme and higher-level taxonomical treatments into a much simpler way. With
the integration of classical taxonomy and phylogenetic studies many of the molecular level
classifications were adopted in agreement with the ICZN codes. Couple of years back Dubois
et al., (2021) proposed a new system of classification relying on phylogenetic studies with a
few attempts of integrative taxonomic approach, though this scheme of classification was not
completely followed by many of the global amphibian researchers including Amphibian
Species of the World (ASW) global database (Frost 2022).
In view of these, we are taking here a pluralistic method of adopting a few of the proposals
made by Dubois et al., 2021, but largely following Frost, 2022. Besides, for the first time,
common names have been proposed here for the Indian Amphibian species to facilitate easy
amphibian identification at the local (field) scale.
Most of the Indian amphibian species were assessed for Global IUCN Conservation Status
largely between 2004 to 2012 with few species assessments in addition in the recent past
(https://www.iucnredlist.org/). In parallel, Conservation Needs Assessment
(https://www.conservationneeds.org) is attempting to assess the Indian Amphibian species
for identifying priority species for conservation actions.
