Functions

Arithmetic operations on functions

1 If f and g are functions, we define

(f + g )(x) = f (x) + g (x) (1)

(f − g )(x) = f (x) − g (x) (2)
(fg )(x) = f (x)g (x) (3)
(f /g )(x) = f (x)/g (x) (4)

We define their domain to be the intersection of the domains of f

and g and for Eq. (4) g (x) 6= 0.

2 Example 1: Let f (x) = 2 + x + 1 and g (x) = x + 2. Find the
domains and formulas for the functions f + g , f − g , fg , f /g and 3f .
√ √
3 Example 2: Show that if f (x) = x + 1, g (x) = x + 1 and
h(x) = x + 1, then the domain of fg is not the same as the natural
domain of h.

Functions

Composite functions

Definition: If f and g are functions, the composition of f and g , denoted

by f ◦ g , is a function defined by

(f ◦ g )(x) = f (g (x)) (5)

The domain of f ◦ g consist of all x in the domain of g for which g (x) is

in the domain of f .

Example: Let f (x) = x 2 + 2 and g (x) = x. Then

(f ◦ g )(x) = f (g (x)) = [g (x)]2 + 2 = ( x)2 + 2 = x + 2. Now determine
(g ◦ f )(x).

Functions

Symmetry

1 Types of symmetries:
a) symmetry about the x-axis
b) symmetry about the y -axis
c) symmetry about the origin
2 Theorem (Symmetry tests)
a) A plane curve is symmetric about the y -axis if and only if replacing x
by −x in its equation produces an equivalent equation.
b) A plane curve is symmetric about the x-axis if and only if replacing y
by −y in its equation produces an equivalent equation.
c) A plane curve is symmetric about the origin if and only if replacing both
x by −x and y by −y in its equation produces an equivalent equation.

Functions

Even and Odd functions

1 A function is f is said to be an even function if

f (−x) = f (x)

Example 1: If f (x) = x 2 then f (−x) = (−x)2 = x 2 = f (x)

2 A function is f is said to be an odd function if

f (−x) = −f (x)

Example 2: If f (x) = sin x then f (−x) = sin(−x) = − sin x = −f (x)
