Program and Year Level:
Date of Performance: Score: ________

INSTRUCTION. Answer the following problems with clear solutions. Highlight your final answer.

Situation 1. A double-angle truss member consists of two angles 125mm x 88mm x10mm thick with the 125mm
side welded to a gusset plate. The member is to carry a total tensile force of 848kN. Using a 6mm fillet weld E70
electrode. Use Fy =250 MPa

a) Determine the total length of the weld.

b) Determine the value of L1
c) Determine the value of L2

Situation 2. A single plate 225mm x 612mm is fastened to the flange of the

column with 6 rivets arranged as shown. The maximum load on a center rivet
shall not exceed 42,000N. Assume that the diameter of holes is 3mm bigger
than that of rivets.

Tension plate = 138 MPa Bearing of rivets = 220 MPa Shearing of

rivets = 112 MPa
a) Calculate the required diameter of the rivet in the bracket connection
b) Calculate the safe P that the bracket could carry
c) Calculate the thickness of the plate considering the bearing stress.

Situation 3. Referring to the figure and data given in example #1 on bracket connection, compute the
following:

a) Shear stress due to axial load only

b) Shear stress due to moment only
c) Maximum shearing stress
