1) In a counter flow double pipe heat exchanger oil is cooled from 85 OC to 55 OC by water entering at 25 OC
the mass flow rate of oil is 9800 kg/h and specific heat of oil is 2000 J/kgK. The mass flow rate of water is
8000 kg/h and specific heat of water is 4180 J/kgK. Determine the heat exchanger area and heat transfer rate
for an overall heat transfer quotient of 280 W/m2K. Find the length of the tube if inner diameter is 0.1 meters.
2) In a double pipe heat exchanger hot fluid with specific heat of 2300 J/kgK enters at 380 OC and leaves at
300 OC. Cold fluid enters at 25 OC and leaves at 210 OC. Calculate the heat exchanger area required for counter
flow. What would be the percentage of increase in area if flow is parallel. Take overall heat transfer
coefficient as 750 W/m2K and mass flow rate of hot fluid as 1 kg/s.
3) In a chemical plant 1000 kg/min of the product at 700 OC (Cp=3.6 kJ/kgK) are to be used to heat 1200 kg/min
of the incoming fluid from 100 OC (CP=4.2 kJ/kgK). If the installed heat transfer surface area is 42 m2 and the
overall heat transfer coefficient is 1 KW/m2K. Compare the fluid outlet temperature with counter flow and
parallel flow arrangements.
4) In an industry 0.6 kg/s of oil (CP=2.5 kJ/kgK) is to be cooled in a counter flow heat exchanger from 110 OC
to 235 OC by the use of water entering at 20 OC. The overall heat transfer coefficient is expected to be
1500W/m2K. Presume that exit temperature of water is not to exceed 80 OC. Using NTU method, calculate
(a) water flow rate, (b) surface area and, (c) effectiveness.
5) A tubular heat exchanger consists of 1200 tubes each 20mm OD and 5m length. Hot fluid flows inside the
tube and cold over it but in the opposite direction. The overall heater transfer coefficient based on OD is 320
W/m2K. Determine the outlet temperature of both fluids and the total heat transfer. Take 𝑚̇ℎ = 20𝑘𝑔/𝑠,
1−𝑒 −𝑁𝑇𝑈(1−𝑐)
𝑚̇𝑐 = 5𝑘𝑔/𝑠, 𝐶𝑃ℎ = 2𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑔𝐾, 𝐶𝑃𝑐 = 4𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑔𝐾, 𝑇ℎ𝑖 = 120℃, 𝑇𝑐𝑖 = 20℃, and ∈= .
1−𝐶𝑒 −𝑁𝑇𝑈(1−𝑐)
