PERSONAL TEACHING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

I want to be a teacher because I want to inspire and shape young minds, making a
positive impact on their future. I would do this by setting good examples to help
them to emulate and giving them equal opportunities irrespective of their academic
strength.
I believe that teaching is a powerful way to share knowledge, foster growth, and
empower learners to reach their full potential because teaching is like planting
seeds of knowledge and watching them blossom into a love for learning. Teaching
and learning are not just about fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for
lifelong learning.
To understand the needs of diverse learners, it’s important to foster open
communication by encouraging learners to express their unique perspectives and
provide them with support, actively listen, and adapt teaching strategies to
accommodate different learning styles and abilities as well as creating a safe and
inclusive environment.
Their needs can be addressed through teaching by providing differentiated
instruction, offering various learning opportunities, and fostering a supportive and
inclusive learning environment and by incorporating various instructional
strategies, such as visual aids, hands-on activities, and collaborative learning, we
can cater to different learning styles and engage all learners.
My past and current teaching experiences have informed my desire to be a teacher
because it has enabled me to gain valuable insights into the impact and fulfillment
that comes with being a teacher.
Reflection of my beliefs and goals relating to upper primary, I believe in creating a
nurturing and inclusive environment where students feel valued and empowered to
reach their full potential. My goal is to foster a love for learning, encourage critical
thinking, and instill lifelong skills that will prepare them for success.
Through my experience in teaching and learning, I have developed a deep
understanding of the importance of creating meaningful connections with learners,
adapting instructional strategies to meet their diverse needs, and fostering a
positive and collaborative learning environment.

Below are some of the NTS targets I wish to achieve in this year's STS.

Report on leadership
As a student teacher, I have been equipped with effective leadership skills within the classroom
and wider school community. With the guidance of my lead mentor and mentor, I was able to
identify my abilities as a leader, both within the legal and ethical codes of conduct required by a
professional teacher, ensuring my actions are always within the scope of principles upholding
integrity, respect and professionalism and serving as the lead mentee for my team.
In the classroom, I was privileged to set rules and regulations for the class ensuring that the
classroom is conducive for learning. In Akwakupom Methodist Basic School, I was privileged to
interact with learners for both Basic three and four where I ensured leaners abided by rules like
going out for break as soon as they hear the bell ring and return to the class after the bell rings
for break over. I also ensured that learners do not eat in class, that they do not raise their hands
while someone is answering a question and lastly that they sit upright and fold their arms during
teaching and learning. This rules have ensured that learners tolerate each other’s view and
attentiveness during lessons.
As a lead mentee, I was tasked in ensuring that all mentees were present at all times and if there
was any emergency which resulted in a mentee missing school, I communicate it to her mentor
and the lead mentor as well. I served as channel of communication between the mentees and the
school and community at large. I participated actively in the school’s co-curricular activities to
further connect with learners outside the classroom and contribute to their holistic development.
Furthermore, I actively participate in play and lunchtime activities, engaging with students in a
positive and supportive manner to promote a sense of community and inclusivity within the
school environment. By interacting with students outside of the classroom setting, I am able to
build rapport, establish trust, and create a welcoming atmosphere where all students feel valued
and accepted.
In conclusion, my experiences as a student teacher at Akwakupom Methodist Basic School have
enabled me to develop and demonstrate effective leadership qualities both within the classroom
and in the wider school community. By adhering to legal and ethical codes of conduct, setting
clear rules and regulations, engaging with patrons and stakeholders, participating in school
activities and meetings, leading assemblies, and taking part in play and lunchtime activities, I
have shown my commitment to fostering a positive and collaborative school culture. My
leadership approach is rooted in empathy, communication, and a genuine desire to support the
growth and development of all stakeholders within the school community. Through my
continued dedication to leadership excellence, I aim to make a positive impact on the lives of
students and contribute to the overall success of the school community.
The mentorship program scheduled for the second semester of final year students of every college of
education is aimed at equipping students with hands on practice, experience and exposure to their field
of study outside the world of theories. I was privileged to be posted to Akwakupom Methodist Basic
School, where I learnt quite a number of things that has helped shaped my personal life owing to the
fact that I experienced living in the village for the very first time. Asides my personal experience, I learnt
how to work on the class register, assessment, report cards and how to oversee certain affairs that was
delegated to me as the lead mentee of my team. I taught Basic three and four, I taught all subjects as my
colleague mentee, mentor and I shared the subjects amongst ourselves and rotated it in every two
weeks. I was able to identify the subjects I do well and the ones I am not so good at and how to
overcome my fears. The scope of this internship lasted for an academic term which is equivalent to
fourteen weeks. I got exposed to some traits I admired from the following teachers, Mr. Akuffo
Emmanuel and Md. Owusu Joyce Boadiwaa. Making up the primary department are Mr. Adjei Daniel,
Md. Akor Beatrice, Md. Owusuaa Nkansah Oduruwaa, Md. Amenya Yvonne and the above mentioned
names. My aim and expectations for this practice was to equip myself with hands on experience and
acquisition of skills and to familiarize myself with living in a village.

Akwakupom is a suburb of the eastern region of Ghana which is situated in the Akuapim South
District. The school is located in the heart of the town, enveloped with farms and trees. The
school has a complete classroom structure for some departments and an uncomplete structure for
other departments. The school was headed by Mr Kingsley Ahwiren and assisted by Md.
Beatrice Akor as the first in command (Upper Primary) followed by Mr Sebastian Kpodo Second
in Command (JHS). The school was established in 1920 by Methodist Missionaries. The staff are
twenty in number, four make up the KG department, six make up the Primary Department, the
Head teacher and the rest represent the JHS Department. The population of the learners sum up
to 106. The new head teacher of Akwakupom is in the person of Mr Emmanuel Osae Kwakye
assisted by Mr. Louis and Md. Beatrice Akor. The classroom environment of the KG Department
is very conducive for learning and learner friendly whereas, that of both the Primary and JHS
Departments need assistance in completing the building and provision of some learning
materials. I employed cultural diversity, inclusivity and equity during my practice both in the
classroom and outside the classroom. I planned my lessons with my colleague mentee and our
mentor, we ensured the need for differentiation, tailoring instructions to meet the diverse needs
of learners, learners were assessed with all forms of assessment, most especially, fist to five (0-
5), this is done after lesson delivery, learners show how they have understood the lesson using
the fingers. I collaborated with my mentor and that played a vital role in guiding and aiding me
through my teaching experience. I observed my learners, searched for co-teaching opportunities,
joined weekly discussions with my colleague mentees to discuss lesson plans, student progress
and resources. I created an environment that fostered greater collaboration and therefore, a better
lesson end product as well as improved student engagement. I participated in PLCs around
certain content or instructional practices and also in collaborative inquiry; reviewed student
work; and analyzed data for instructional decisions. Supported ongoing professional
development as well as reflective practice.
With classroom management strategies, I ensured that all learners sat upright and folded their arms
when I am to deliver a lesson and ensure they obey the bell at all times, thus, coming to class on time,
no eating in class before, during and after break. With the use of mixed ability groupings, most of my
lessons were learner centered as learners provided the basics information for the lesson with the aid of
real life situations. I identified a problem in my class and that was bad handwriting, I devised a method
to help improve that. I bought A1 for most of my learners and gave them writing exercise each day. My
mentor discussed my strengths and weaknesses with me after every lesson and I have learnt that as a
teacher you have to evaluate yourself at the end of every lesson.

I have learnt quite a number of things during this internship program, how to live with people, how to
adapt to situations and life instances. How to blend real life situations with lessons so the learners can
grasp information easily. I have been able to improve the writing skills of Basic four learners as well as
aided some of them to build confidence. I have also learnt to master my content before lesson delivery
and always good use of TLRs.
Report on whole class
Basic four learners of Akwakupom Methodist Basic School are lively, interactive. Most of them
have potential but lack support from home and confidence in themselves. They have assigned
answering questions to one specific learner and once the learner isn’t able to answer they will all
shy away. Upon further interactions, supporting and pushing them I identified their problem and
discussed with my mentor how best to help them.
Supervising learners to work on compound
Learners ensure that they come to school early to clean the compound and classroom to prepare
the class for the day’s activities. As mentees, we were responsible for ensuring that the learners
do their tasks effectively and efficiently. This encompasses sweeping the compound, classrooms,
and offices, filling veronica buckets and watering the classrooms to reduce the level of dust
during class activities.

This encompasses the observation and participation in assembly, early morning activities like
sweeping, cleaning, fetching water to fill veronica buckets.
