MCG3145: Final exam

Dec. 10th, 2021

IMPORTANT: You must hand-write the following statement with your signature in the
first page of your solutions:

”I affirm that I will not give or receive any unauthorized help on this exam, and that all
work will be my own.” – your signature.

Instruction:

• There are totally THREE questions in Part I of the midterm exam, each question is
worth 20 points;

• The exam time starts at 10:00 AM and stops at 11:00 AM on Oct. 18th (Monday),
2021. For students who officially requested accommodations, please follow the schedule
that has been arranged separately;

• Please scan and upload your solutions via Brightspace before 11:20 AM. For late sub-
missions, one point will be deducted from the midterm exam score for every minute
pass the deadline. If you have technical issues to upload the solution, you
need to email me immediately. Failure to upload your solution before 11:30 AM
(ten minutes after the deadline) will result in a score of zero;

• This exam is open-book. Using textbook, notes, homework and tutorial problem solu-
tions are permitted. Discussions with any other person during the exam are
strictly prohibited;

• Unless otherwise instructed, please join the Zoom meeting and turn on your camera.
If due to technical glitches, the camera could not be kept on during the entire exam,
it will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and may result in a score of zero.

Question 1 (10 points): Figure 1 shows the dimensions of the thin-walled hollow rectan-
gular cross-section of an extrusion made from aluminum alloy. A counter-clockwise torque
T is applied to this thin-walled cross-section. The allowable shear stress of the aluminum
alloy is 130 MPa. The shear modulus of the aluminum alloy is G = 205 GPa.
(i). Calculate the maximum value of the torque T that can be applied to the thin-walled
cross-section (5 points);
(ii). Calculate the torsional stiffness of the extrusion if its length L equals to 500 mm (5
points).

Question 2 (20 points): Figure 2 shows a beam cross-section made from a material having
an allowable tensile stress of 130 MPa and an allowable compressive stress of 160 MPa. The
bending moment M is applied to the beam on the y-z plane and forms an angle of 35◦ with
the horizontal direction.
(i). Determine the location of the centroid c of the beam cross-section relative to the lower
left corner A (5 points);
(ii). Calculate the moments of inertia Iy and Iz around the principal axes (5 points);
(iii). Determine the maximum allowable moment M that can be applied to the beam (10
points).

Question 3 (20 points): Figure 3 shows a thin-walled cross-section undergoing a vertical

shear force V = 100 N. The dimensions of the thin-walled cross-section are indicated in the
figure. All the members of the cross-section has a thickness of 2 mm. The vertical shear
force V is applied at the shear center S of the cross-section. For simplification, all the
calculations can be based on the center-lines.
(i). Calculate the shear stresses at the section a-a and the section b-b (10 points);
(ii). Calculate the distance e between the shear center S and the center-line of the web (10
points).

(i). Calculate the three-principal stresses (5 points);

(ii). Calculate the maximum shear stress (5 points);
(iii). If the yield stress σyp of the material is 80 MPa, does the material fail according to
the von Mises yield criterion (5 points)?

Question 5 (20 points): Figure 5 shows a planar system that is made of a steel wire CD
and a steel beam AG. The cross-section area of the steel wire CD is A1 = 600 mm2 . The
cross-section area of the steel beam AG is A2 = 1000 mm2 . The moment of inertia of the
steel beam AG is I2 = 4.0 × 106 mm4 . The Young’s modulus of the steel is E = 200 GPa,
and the external force is P = 1 kN. Find the horizontal deflection ∆H at the free end G of
the steel beam (ignore the deformation caused by the shear force effects).

Question 6 (15 points): Figure 6 shows a system located on the x-y plane. The system
consists of four steel wires AB, BC, CD, and DA. The steel bar BD acts as a spreader bar
in the system. The dimensions of the system components are shown in Fig. 6. The Young’s
modulus for the steel wires and the steel bar is E = 200 GPa. The steel bar BD has a 15 mm
by 10 mm rectangular cross-section, and the cross-section areas of all the four steel wires
are A = 100 mm2 . The ultimate strength of the four steel wires is σult = 100 MPa. What
is the maximum magnitude of load P that the system can sustain? (Assume the factors of
safety for all components equal to 1.0. When the steel bar buckles, the system is considered
to fail.)‘
