Coffee shop customers and their annoying habits
People who like to have a daily Americano or latte in a coffee shop often do many things that baristas really
hate. Read on to find out if you are one of these difficult customers!
One of the worst habits of café-goers is talking on their phones while ordering coffee. Baristas don’t like it
for at least two reasons. One is that when you talk on the phone, you can’t concentrate on your order
and payment, which makes the whole transaction take longer. The other is that by doing so you show a total
lack of respect towards the person who is preparing your drink.
Sometimes customers ask baristas to recommend a particular coffee or food item that’s on the menu. While
there’s nothing wrong with asking about the flavour or ingredients, the question ‘Is this good?’ can be a bit
annoying. After all, the food and drinks are put on the menu for a reason. Moreover, it can be frustrating when
a customer spends a few minutes asking for recommendations and then has something completely different to
eat.
There are also the customers who go behind the counter to grab a plate or a spoon. Some even help
themselves to extra milk or a piece of cake! This is not only rude, but people behaving this way are also putting
themselves and others in danger. What if someone burns their hand with hot steam from a coffee machine
or contaminates the food with their dirty hands?
So next time you keep others waiting in a queue because you’re on the phone to a friend, think twice.
And, remember – being polite can take you a long way in life!
Hi Amy,
Are you still planning to get a job in a café? I’m not sure if it’s such a good idea. I’ve just read an article about
some of the horrible habits of coffee shop customers. Many of them talk on 1 ______________ while ordering
and paying for coffee. This only shows that they don’t 2 ______________ the barista. What is more, people
often don’t know what to have, so they ask 3 ______________ to help them decide. But often, they will order
a completely 4 ______________ drink or item of food! There are also customers who take a plate or a piece
of cake from behind the counter without asking. It could be dangerous – what if you burn your hand,
for example? Plus, I wouldn’t want anyone with dirty hands to 5 ______________ my food before I ate it.
So I really think you should think twice before working in a café!
Yours,
Kate
