Paula’s blog
Two years ago, I had a really pleasant winter. I went on holiday to Australia, and I had a lot of
fun. I made a credit card so I could buy things while I was there. One thing that I bought was a cycling
adventure.
When my friend and I went cycling, we had to buy tickets to enter the cycling park. I didn’t
need to pull out any cash because I paid for everything with the credit card. The people who work at
the cycling park are really friendly. They explained everything very carefully. After cycling, I also went
hiking in the desert. The Uluru Base Walk was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.
Yesterday, I was talking with my friend. I asked her, “Did you remember when we went on the
Uluru Base Walk? Wasn’t it beautiful?” She agreed. Now, we are making plans to visit Australia next
year.

The Florida Everglades is one of the USA’s largest and most beautiful national parks and a great place
to escape from the city. But every year, around 60 visitors get into trouble in its 4,000 square miles of
swamps. So what are the dangers and what must you do to survive your trip there?
The Everglades are full of dangerous mud bogs. They can swallow a car or a person in a few minutes.
If you fall into a bog, keep calm. Moving a lot only pulls you in deeper. Pull each leg out slowly, then
lie flat and crawl out carefully.
There are hundreds of mosquitoes, scorpions, and poisonous spiders and snakes in the Everglades
swamps. Their bites and stings can be very dangerous and sometimes fatal. Always look where you
walk, wear long pants, strong boots, and lots of insect repellent.
It can rain a lot in the Everglades and flash floods are a real danger. A flash flood is a wall of water
travelling at 60 mph. Climb up a cliff or a tree. You have to get to the highest place you can and
quickly!
More than a million alligators live in the swamps, and they hide without moving. So how can you see
where they are? Well, bubbles on the water can be an alligator getting ready for lunch! These reptiles
can run up to 30 mph. They can’t turn quickly, so if you see an alligator, you must run away as fast as
you can.

that cheating is OK now, because it’s common. That’s a problem.

university. You have to get good grades, and to get good grades some people think they have to

VI. Read the text, and do the tasks that follow.
Learning at home
In Britain some families feel that learning at home is better than going to school. Home-schooled
children can choose when they want to learn. Does this sound more enjoyable than school? Adrian is
a science prodigy, and he wants to start university by the age of fourteen. He finds school lessons
easier than most children, but making friends more difficult.
At home, he can spend more time on his favourite subjects and is preparing to take many of his exams
early. Does he ever take a break? “Yes,” he says, “I don’t study subjects I’m not interested in.”
Holly’s parents weren’t happy with the local school, so they made a decision to teach her at home.
Her favourite subject is history and she often goes to museums to study. “I couldn’t do that before,”
she says. “This is more interesting than school was.” Her parents are always happy to help her.
Adrian and Holly love learning at home, but some people think that studying at school is more useful
because it trains you for adult life. It teaches you to be with people you don’t like, but it can also help
you to make friends. Are these things more important than lessons? What do you think?

Boarding School
Mr. Lee Why do you go to a boarding school?
Anna My parents are musicians. They work in a different country every month. It’s difficult for me to
go to a normal secondary school, so I go to Cardiff.
Mr. Lee Could you describe a typical day at your school?
Anna We have to get up at seven o’clock. We have classes and activities all day from 8.30 a.m. to 5
p.m. In the evenings, we don’t have to do anything. We can watch films, we can chat with our
friends and eat sweets and biscuits, or we can chat on our mobile phones. We must be in bed
by ten-thirty. “Lights out” is at eleven o’clock.
Mr. Lee What subjects do you have to study?
Anna Private schools don’t have to follow the National Curriculum - that is the list of subjects
specified by the government, but everyone at my school must study English, Maths, Science
and also Welsh, because our school is in Wales.
Mr. Lee Do you have to study any other subjects?
Anna Well, the other subjects aren’t compulsory. I’m studying citizenship, history, music, PE, and
French. There’s also Personal Social and Health Education. In PSHE, we learn about health and
society. I get good marks, but I hate it. It’s boring!
Mr. Lee Do you like your boarding school?
Anna Absolutely. The head teacher is good and I like the school. But we have to wear a school
uniform.

“I’ve left my homework at home” because we live at school.

Ambitious People
It's good to be ambitious because it helps us work hard. This week, reader Maria Turner writes about
her ambition and how she hopes to make it come true.
“I love playing football and, like thousands of other teenagers, my dream is to become a famous
football player and mix with the top players. Of course, I know that this isn’t going to happen, because
professional football is very competitive. But I have a plan. I’m going to become a professional
referee.
The referee makes all the decisions about a game, but he or she is also responsible for safety in the
stadium. He or she can stop a game if there are problems with the weather or the crowd. A good
referee must have a strong personality and be able to take difficult decisions - with thousands of fans
shouting at you, this isn’t easy. A good referee must also be confident and good at talking to people.
Most players are easy to talk to, but some behave badly. Referees are well-paid because pressure
from sponsors and managers makes it a stressful job.
I am sure that I have the right qualities to become a good referee. I like making decisions, and I enjoy
telling people what to do. I am outgoing and good with people. Also, I don’t mind working in stressful
situations. But most of all, I am passionate about football.
How am I going to achieve my ambition? First, I’m going to do a course to become a referee for my
local club. After that, I’m going to work hard and pass exams so that I can work with more important
teams. It isn’t going to be easy, but I’m confident and excited about the future.”

Follow Your Passion
How are you going io choose your future career? Would you like your passion or hobby to become
your work? Read about three teenagers with plans to do exactly that.
“Music is my passion, and I want to make it my career and be an audio engineer. I want to work at
concerts and music festivals. 1 think I have the right qualities for the job. I’m a musician, and I’m hard-
working and flexible. This is important because the working hours aren't regular in the music world.
This summer, I’m not going on holiday; I’m going to help at a music festival in July. When 1 graduate, I

XII. Read the text, and do the tasks that follow.
Summerhill School
If you travel about 140 kilometres north of London to England’s east coast, you’ll find a very unusual
school. It’s a boarding school in a large nineteenth-century building, where children, teachers, and
other members of staff live, eat, and study together. Its name is Summerhill. There are about a
hundred students at the school, aged between five and eighteen, and the school has its own library,
theatre, sports hall and playing fields. What makes the school different, however, is the way it treats
its students. Summerhill is a free school. If you go there, you have the right to choose when you
attend classes, the right to vote on school rules, and the right to take exams ..., but only if you want
to. If you prefer going for a walk in the countryside instead of going to maths, that’s OK. Nobody is
going to punish you.
This may sound like a new and revolutionary idea for a school, but, actually, Summerhill first opened
in the 1920s, society believed that children were immature and irresponsible and that the only way to
educate them was to be strict. Children had to wear uniforms, be silent, and never ask questions.
School regularly used corporal punishment when pupils broke the school rules, and there were so
many rules that it was difficult not to get into trouble. In contrast, A.S. Neil, the man who started
Summerhill, wanted a school where children were free to make their own decisions and to give their
opinions. His philosophy was that if you’re responsible for what you say and what you do, you’ll make
decisions that are good for you and for other people. He believed that all crimes and all wars only
happened because people were unhappy, so he created a school where students were free to be
happy.
Nowadays, the rules in state secondary schools aren’t as strict as they were a hundred years ago, but
the pressure on students to work hard and do well is perhaps greater than before. In the future, there
will probably be more tests and exams in state schools, but not at Summerhill. Students there will be
free to discuss ideas, write stories, play games and act in plays. In this way, these young people will
develop their imaginations and their personalities.
Interestingly, however, some things are going to change soon at Summerhill. A.s. Neil died in 1973,
and his daughter, Zoe Neil Readhead, is the head teacher today. In a recent book, she wrote that the
school is going to introduce more discipline because young people today are spoiled. Modern parents
spend a lot of time with their children - they take them to interesting places, they organize things for
them to do, and they buy them lots of presents. In Ms Readhead’s opinion, this isn’t always a good
thing. When these young people get to Summerhill, they don’t know how to do things by themselves,
and they are too selfish to understand how other young people feel. They need to learn to be free
from having their lives organized by adults. Summerhill continues to be a school that believes young
people should live their own lives, not the lives that their parents and teachers think they should
have.

New Kids At School?
Going to school in a new town can be pretty stressful. Believe me, I know from experience. Not to
worry though, there are ways to get through it. Here are a few tips I’ve come up with. I hope they
help.
A When you go in on your first day at your new school, remember that not everyone is as scary
as they seem. Those first few hours are always a bit rough, but don’t be afraid or shy. Just go
for it. It’s nearly always true that most people are nice once you have a chance to talk to them.
B It’s likely that your teachers will introduce you to your new classmates, but make sure you
personally introduce yourself to the student sitting next to you. Looking for something to talk
about? Don’t worry. Being new is a great topic. People seem to love talking about where
you’re from and the school you used to go to.
C Take time to learn the names of other people, and don’t forget to take interest in the person
you’re talking to. It shows that you’re not just concerned about yourself, but also learning
about the other person.
D It sounds obvious but it really works: make eye contact with others, smile at them when they
look at you and laugh when they say something that’s amusing to you. It makes you seem
open and easy-going.
E Nobody expects you to know everything about your new school the first day you walk in. It’s
highly probably that your new school will be totally different from the one you just came from.
If you have a question, ask it. Don’t forget that everyone is new at some point.
F Whether you’re entering a new school at the beginning of the year or in the middle, the best
way to meet new people is by joining in activities like clubs and sports. After school is a time
when students with similar interests get together and it’s an ideal way to introduce yourself.
G If you’re good at a certain sport or do well in a certain subject, don’t be shy - show it! People
are drawn to others with talent, and hiding yours to avoid showing off will only end up hurting
you. So if you have a special talent or skill, let people know about it.
