The Easy ways to Solve tricky Word Problems

Que.1: The same kind for Rs. 1300. Represent this situation algebraically.

Que.2: The cost of 2 kg of apples and 1 kg of grapes on a day was found to be Rs. 160. After a
month, the cost of 4 kg of apples and 2 kg of grapes is Rs. 300. Represent the situation
algebraically.

Que.3: 2 tables and 3 chairs together cost Rs. 2000 whereas 3 tables and 2 chairs together cost Rs.
2500. Find the total cost of 1 table and 5 chairs.

Que.4: 3 bags and 4 pens together cost Rs. 257 whereas 4 bags and 3 pens together cost Rs. 324.
Find the total cost of 1 bag and 10 pens.

Que.5: 5 books and 7 pens together cost Rs. 79 whereas 7 books and 5 pens together cost Rs. 77.
Find the total cost of book and 2 pens.

Que.6: 3 chairs and 2 tables cost Rs. 700 and 5 chairs and 3 tables cost Rs. 1100. What is the cost of
2 chairs and 2 tables?

Que.7: Aftab tells his daughter, “Seven years ago, I was seven times as old as you were then. Also,
three years from now, I shall be three times as old as you will be.” Represent this situation
algebraically.

Que.8: Two years ago, a father was five times as old as his son. Two years later, his age will be 8
more than three times the age of the son. Find the present ages of father and son.

Que.9: The age of a father is equal to the sum of the ages of his 5 children. After 15 years sum of the
ages of the children will be twice the age of the father. Find the age of father.

Que.10:Ten years ago, the sum of the ages of two sons was one third of their father’s age. One son is
two years older than the other and sum of their present ages is 14 years less than the
father’s present age. Find the present ages of all.

Que.11:If twice the son’s age in years is added to the father’s age, the sum is 70. But if twice the
father’s age is added to the son’s age, the sum is 95. Find the ages of father and son.

Que.12:I am three times as old as my son. 5 years later, I shall be two and a half times as old as my
son. How old am I and how old is my son?

Que.13:A and B are friends and B is 2 years younger than A. A’s father D is twice as old as A and B is
twice as his sister C. the age of D and C differ by 40 years. Find the ages of A and B.

Que.14:Father’s age is three times the sum of ages of his two children. After 5 years his age will be
twice the sum of age of two children. Find the age of father.

Que.15:5 years hence the age of father shall be three times the age of his son while 5 years earlier
the age of the father was 7 times the age of his son. Find the present ages.

Que.16:A number consists of three digits whose sum is 17. The middle one exceeds the sum of the
other two by 1. If the digits be reversed, the number is diminished by 396. Find the number.

Que.17:The age of father is equal to the sum of ages of his 6 children. After 15 years, twice the age
of the father will be the sum of the ages of his children. Find the age of father.

Que.18:The ages of two friends Sunaina and Tinishtha differ by 2 years. Sunaina’s father is twice as
old as Sunaina and Tanishtha is twice as old as his brother Shiva. The ages of Sunaina’s father
and Shiva differ by 40 years. find the ages of Sunaina and Tinishtha.

Que.19:If 1 is added to each of numerators and denominator of a fraction, it becomes 2/3. However,
if 1 is subtracted from each of numerator and denominator it becomes 3/5. Find the
fraction.

Que.20:Solve the following pair of equations:

4/x +3y = 8; 6/x - 4y = 5

Que.21:The sum of the numerator and the denominator of a fraction is 4 more than twice the
numerator. If 3 is added to each of the numerator and denominator, their ratio becomes
2:3. Find the fraction.

Que.22:The sum of the numerator and denominator of a fraction is 12. If 1 is added to both the
numerator and the denominator the fraction becomes ¾. Find the fraction.

Que.23:A fraction reduces by 4/5 when 2 is subtracted from the numerator and 3 is added to the
denominator. But it reduces to 12/17 if 6 is added to the numerator and the denominator is
multiplied by 2. Find the fraction.

subtracted from the number, the digits interchange places. Find the number.
