CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodologies used by the

researchers to get the sufficient information needed for the

realization of this research, the research design,

population, sampling method, instrument used in gathering of

data and its analyses are presented here as well.

Research Design

This study makes use of a descriptive method.

Descriptive method focuses at the present condition. The

objective is to seek truth and find truth. The truth may have

different forms such as increase the quantity of knowledge,

a new generalization and casual relationship and new insights

into factors which is operating. Descriptive method of

research may be defined purposive process of gathering,

analyzing, classifying, and tabulating data about prevailing

conditions, practices, beliefs process, trends and cause-

effect relationship and them making adequate interpretation

about such data with or without the aid of statistical method

(Kowalczyk, 2014). From the given purpose of this method,

this will discern the extent of the language skills of the

English majors. It also extracts the language activities that

46

the students have in their classes. This also makes the

students aware of the skills they possess. This method enables

the researchers the different responses of the respondents

from the data that will be gathered using the two (2)

variables presented in the study.

Population and Sample Size

There are a total one hundred sixteen (116) English

Majors students enrolled in the present year. Using the

Slovin’s formula (1960), the researchers are able to have

ninety (90) students to be used in the study.

The Slovin’s Formula (1960)

Where:

n = the sample size

N = the population

Sampling Technique

The researchers will utilize the stratified sampling

method. Stratified sampling is a probabilistic sampling

technique wherein the researcher divides the entire

population into different subgroups or strata, then randomly

selects the final subjects proportionally from the

different strata (Kaplan, 2014). There will be three

subgroups for the study 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year English

Majors. By that, there will be thirty (30) respondents per

stratum. In total, the respondents would be ninety (90).

Students from the above mentioned year levels have English

subjects that will fall under the English for Specific

Purposes (ESP) that is the foundation of this study.

Year Level Total Population Sample

2nd year 45 30

3rd year 38 30

4th year 36 30

Instrumentation

The research will utilize survey questionnaire base from

the format of different researches made used for the English

for Specific Purposes. It is highly important to be remembered

that language needs analysis is constantly changing activity.

It is a process that continuously done. This leads to

constantly checking and reassessing of the conclusions made

by any research focusing on the said subject. The

questionnaire underwent validation, and it was validated by

the professors in the field of English. The validation process

took 3 Weeks. The questionnaire consists of two major

categories; it is as follow (1) language skills and (2)

language activities.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will send a letter of approval to the

University President and to the Dean of the College of

49

Education. The letter comprises of the procedure and purpose

of the study. Once it is approved by the President and the

Dean, the researchers will start to conduct the survey. It

will be done at the college of education. The researchers

will communicate with the English majors’ professors to ask

permission for the survey to be conducted.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were used to answer the

specific problems and to test the hypothesis in this study.

Percentage

= 100

Where:

P = percentage

f = frequency

n = total number of respondents

Likert Scale

The responses to questions in the given variables were

scaled using the Likert Scale system and give weight as

follows:
50

I. Language Skills

Rate Verbal Range

Interpretation

1 Needs Improvement 1-1.49

2 Satisfactory 1.50-2.49

3 Good 2.50-3.49

4 Exemplary 3.50-4

II. Language Activities

Rate Verbal Range

Interpretation

1 Never 1-1.49

2 Sometimes 1.50-2.49

3 Often 2.50-3.49

4 Always 3.50-4
